Best live album of a 50 year career
This album was originally only released in the Far East in 1975 as a double LP recorded, as the title suggests, the previous year. I have had a vinyl copy of this album for a number of years now and have always thought that it was a shame that it never saw the light of day in the UK. At last, however, EMI have seen the light and have decided to give this album a UK release.
There are a number of songs on this album that have never been recorded in a studio by Cliff that were, in a way, the "standards" of their day such as Get Back, Make It easy On Yourself and The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore. These are indicative not of the type of lightweight material that Cliff was recording at the time but of the type of material that he could sing and sing well that he SHOULD have been recording. It wasn't until I'm Nearly Famous in 1976 that Cliff got his teeth into some really good songs again. Had this have been released in the UK it would have bridged the gap perfectly between his earlier recordings and those of the Famous years.
Finally.. Released in the UK.
'Cliff Japan Tour 74' along with it's counterpart 'Live in Japan 72' were only available on LP in the 70's as exspensive imports from Japan. Fans around the world particularly in the UK will welcome these re-issues in CD format, allbeit 'Live in Japan 72' is only part of the box-set 'And they said it wouldn't last'.
'Cliff Japan Tour 74' has a feel good flavour of music and a fab array of Cliff singing his biggest hits. Being 1974, Cliff promotes his recent music from his film 'Take Me High' and his current album at the time '31st of February Street'. Songs like 'His latest flame' 'Sun ain't gonna shine any more' are not sang or available to my knowledge anywhere else!
There's one track ommitted from the original double LP called 'Don't meet the band', which is understandable that EMI did this because the CD is over 77 minutes long and the ommitted track would have way over ran. And may have not fitted. This was the obvious track to delete. To be honest this does not distract from this historic concert recording.
The CD sound quality on these 2009 remasters is beautifully well done 10/10.
The CD booklet faithfully reproduces (like the Japanese writing) the LP front and back cover as well as the 'full' colour photo booklet that came with the LP. Very nicely done!
EMI should consider releasing 'Live in Japan 72' as a separate available CD. I'm sure this would be welcome by a lot of people who enjoy Cliff Richard's music.
