Excellent Wado Ryu book
I bought this book warily because Wado Ryu books are hard to find
and as a general rule I tend to go for first generational books
by the Japanese Wado exponents. I was not disappointed. chris
Thompson's book is a gem for any Wado practitioner for several reasons. It gives a concise history of Wado, the meaning of Wado,
a nice portrait photo of the founder H.Ohtsuka, has excellent
photo-shots clearly showing proper techniques, has lots of
Wado terminology for body parts/strikes, etc. The one possible
criticism might be that the katas (5 pinans) shown vary from those I have learned, but giving the fact that there are diverse
Wado schools now this is a very minor point and besides, the spirit of the kata is evident. If you do Wado, buy it.
A concise introduction to Wado-ryu
I bought this book because, although I have many years experience in another style of karate,I was new to Wado-ryu and wanted a clear guidebook to the style to support my experience at the dojo. I was not disapointed. Chris Thompson's book is clear and concise and the kata explanations (and their variations)are really helpful. The history of Wado that Sensei Thompson presents is also facinating and provides a useful frame of reference for students new to the style. This is an ideal, inexpensive, introduction to the "Way of Peace" school of the empty hand art.
An interesting introduction to Wado Ryu karate
This book offers a westerner's perspective on Wado Ryu karate. Whilst inferior in many ways to Ohgami's 'Introduction to Karate', this book has the redeeming quality of being cheaper. Thompson Sensei is a well respected and experienced karateka and this book offers a different angle on Wado to most others. It is interesting in that his version's of the Pinan katas are more similar to the original katas created by Anko Itosu in 1907 (and the Hiean katas of Funakoshi Sensei) than to those practiced by most modern Wado practitioners.
