Amazon.co.uk Review
Signed to a major label and sweeping into the US Top Ten with their first single (the overplayed "Semi-Charmed Life"), this Bay Area band were ripe targets for those snipers in the alternative rock world who complain about bands not paying their dues. The truth is that 1) 3EB (as their merchandise proclaims them) probably never imagined a hit of that size and 2) it's not one of the best songs on their debut album. Their melange of Smashing Pumpkins, The Edge-style guitar and collegiate hip-hop yields much better results with the piercing tones of "Graduate" and the lyrical playing style evident in most of their songs. Far from being just hype, 3EB have actually produced a better-than-average record for the American alternative rock market with very few weak moments. --Tim Perry
CD Description
This San Francisco band's first album is a study in contradictions, presenting heavy, often melancholy, themes in the guise of catchy, tuneful power pop. The irresistible single "Semi-Charmed Life" is just one example of Kevin Cadogan and Stephan Jenkins' agile lyrical stylings. The delirious tempoaptly reflects both a high feeling and a sense of desperation, of things spinning out of control.
The album is chockfull of searching lyrics set against a background of lush, rhythmic music. "How's It Going To Be" has a palpable sense of nostalgia and loss. The funky "I Want You" expresses a yearning for connection: "Children love to sing but then theirvoices/Slowly fade away/People always take a step away/Fromwhat is true/That's why I like you around/I want you".
Customer Reviews
best album ever written from the greatest band ever formed!!
albums like this are hard to find this day and age, i personally tracked it down because i wanted to hear "semi charmed life" again, you may remember this classic from the end of american pie and in the trailer for jackie chans "mr nice guy". an incredibly bubbly and uplifting song, but the album really changed my opinion on music, i went from liking what ever i heard to having a very critical but diverse taste in music. anyway the albums songs are in a word, fantastic, they say so much about lifes situations and the band writes the music in such a way that you are never bored or waiting to here a good song. all the tracks are excellent, i personally love narcolepsy and back ground. they have an easy listening rock sound, light hearted yet all their songs manage to touch something personal inside. background alone is reason enough to buy this beautiful album. i still listen to it now, and lend it to family constantly. it really will be the first album you own where you just cant stop listening or get the songs out of your head!
[*BEST ALBUM EVER!!*]
this is one of the best albums you are ever likely to buy...instantly accessible, it spans a broad range of emotions and styles, from the controlled anger of "losing a whole year" the emotional "the background", to the catchy "semi-charmed life (which i guaruntee you will recognise)
The guitar riffs are excellent and the lyrics are deep and meaningful and refer to situations we can all relate to
HOW'D YOU LIKE TO BE ALONE AND DROWNING??
This album is a must have whether you are into rock, indie, pop, or even classical music (i am into indie/hard rock and i love it). It is the most important album in my life and i have never tired of it even after 2 years. My favourite tracks are "the background", "motorcycle drive-by" and "how's it going to be?" (3eb do mellow tunes very well)
i cannnot recommend this cd enough....
The Most Important Album In My Life...
This is a long term review; I have listened to this album almost every day over the last couple of years. As far as debut albums go, it is near flawless. Never heard Third Eye Blind? Yes you have - skip to track 3. But the hit 'Semi-Charmed Life', brilliant as it is, is only one of 14 outstanding songs. The band, led by singer-poet Stephan Jenkins, address the full spectrum of human emotion, from restlessness ('Graduate'), to frustration, ('Losing A Whole Year'), to sympathy ('Jumper') to, perhaps most prominently, loss. Songs such as 'Motorcycle Drive-By', 'God of Wine' and 'The Background' will haunt you from your first listen. The now departed Kevin Cadogan breathes new life into the guitar with interesting and innovative textures while Arion Salazar's bass lines are among the most beautifully melodic I have ever heard. As for Stephan Jenkins' lyrics...well they have been one of the most influential aspects of my life over the past few months.
This album is a genuine classic from a band who just seem unable to do anything wrong - If you like this check out the follow-up 'Blue, and the unreleased songs such as 'Gorgeous' and 'Alright Caroline'
