Product Description

'Is this the same Algarve', you may ask, 'as the Algarve of high-rise hotels, fine beaches and a coastline so famous that there is no need to look further?' Such is the beauty of the coastline, that few visitors look for more - but Brian and Eileen Anderson (the authors of this guide) did. They say, "we found a countryside full of interest and beauty, quietly awaiting discovery. From flowers and fountains, hilltops and history, to windmills and water-mills, we can set your feet wandering to find them all". There are car tours, too, to get you out and about, searching out little-known points of interest - like the huge rose compass (rosa dos ventos) on the barren promontory of Sagres, where Prince Henry the Navigator founded his school of navigation, or the Moorish castle and old Roman bridge at Paderne. A guidebook that will add a new dimension to your Algarve holiday. "Very good disciptions of walking tours in Algarve. We did walks nr 1, 2, 3 and 10 in the summer of 2003, and had some breathtaking moments while walking along Algarve's beautiful coastline. The discriptions and directions in the book were excact and easy to follow. Although the walking times in the book didn't quite fit our level of training, it was no big issue as we enjoyed every moment of the walks. We have used the Landscapes series for walking directions in other parts of Europe as well, and we have not yet been disappointed.' (Reviewer)

Looking forward to more walks4
My wife and I have just come back from a short break in the Eastern end of the Algarve. We took this book with us and managed to do walks 17, 18 and 19 - and found them accurate and easy to follow. Some very nice walking indeed, and lively in Spring with so much in blossom. The only small complaint is that, the Algarve being what it is, the walks were never really wild and a lot of "rough old tracks" have now been upgraded to surfaced roads.

We've been fans of Sunflower Guides for years, and although we've had some difficulties with the Andersons' navigation and above all timing in earlier books, we were not disappointed with this one and are looking forward to trying more of the walks before too long.

Landscapes of Algarve2
Very disappointed with this book. Attempted 3 walks, as only in the area for a week. Could not find the start of the first walk, second walk was O.K.,3rd walk abandoned after a couple of miles, lost the plot. The maps are so small and a map of the start to a decent scale would be very helpful. My wife and I are experienced walkers and have used Landscape books before with reasonable satisfaction. We do usually have a walking map, but were advised by the Authors in this case that it was not a good idea. Will try the ROTHER book next time as we found their book on Cyprus last year, better than the Lanscapes.
