From the Author
The definitive guide to working for (and with) clients
I wrote MAKING VIDEOS FOR MONEY to be the first book on video production that would look beyond how to operate television technology to explain the ways it is actually used to deal with clients and make a living. It is based on my more than 20 years of writing, producing, and directing client-sponsored video productions. And I've filled it with stories about working with clients -- both good and bad.
Every area of video production is expanding rapidly. And with this has come an increased demand from businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations for informed professional videomakers. MAKING VIDEOS FOR MONEY provides specific, useful information on how to plan, write, direct, and complete client-sponsored videos successfully.
The book can be used as a comprehensive how-to guide by newcomers or as a valuable resource for professionals facing the need to expand their skills into profitable new areas. Its twenty-two chapters in six sections include: Sponsored Videos, Planning (including research and scriptwriting), Making Information Videos, Making Commercials, Making Infomercials, and Business Considerations (including contracts and budgeting).
Here's what pros working in the field have said about the book:
"Barry Hampe's commonsense appoach to video production puts technology and technique on the back burner and focuses on the production concepts, coordination, and communication required to create videos that sell. This is truly real world insight into the successful making and marketing of videos." -- Archie J. Thornton, former International Marketing Director, Ogilvy & Mather, now President and CEO, The Thornton Works, Inc.
". . . tells you everything you need to know to get into and thrive in the corporate video production business. . . . The book is replete with juicy war stories that provide the reader with personal knowledge gained from the 'school of hard knocks' about the world of working with clients." -- Gary L. Kreps, Ph.D., Dean and Professor, School of Communication, Hofstra University
"Barry Hampe has written the definitive text on producing videos. Logically organized, clearly written, easy to learn from. A 'must read' for every student or professional looking to make money in this lucrative field." -- Tim Hawthorne, Chairman, Hawthorne Direct, Inc. and author of THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO INFOMERCIAL MARKETING.
"Like his other works, this well organized, easy to understand resource is packed with useful, detailed information, real life examples, time-saving techniques, and advice for anyone using video to make money. Barry's experiences and guidance will save the reader precious time and money by eliminating guess work and potential mistakes in producing a video. The detailed production budget checklist has saved my countless hours by eliminating the need for me to develop the material from scratach." -- Michael Ruiz, Aerospace Engineer, NASA - Johnson Space Center
My other books include VIDEO SCRIPTWRITING: HOW TO WRITE FOR THE $4 BILLION COMMERCIAL VIDEO MARKET (Penguin Books, 1993) and MAKING DOCUMENTARY FILMS AND REALITY VIDEOS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO PLANNING, FILMING, AND EDITING DOCUMENTARIES OF REAL EVENTS (Henry Holt & Co., 1997) both available from Amazon.
Customer Reviews
The missing link in the chain of Video Production.
I always wanted to move into Video Production, so I put myself through a course learning about cameras, lighting, sound and the rules of cineography. I scoured the internet for advice on the kit needed, read many a magazine on how to improve my technical skills, but, I knew there was a gaping hole in my arsenal, and wasn`t ready to earn a living. This book, by Barry Hampe is a masterpiece for anyone wanting to create any form of corporate video. He guides you through the complex stage of research, production and post. Even the different types of customers you`ll encounter is covered. He talks in depth about the pitfalls, and has filled that knowledge gap and armed me with the confidence to go out there and JFDI!! Barry has experience, and writes at a nice pace and you feel as if he`s there, guiding you through the tricky stage of getting going. If you are entering into, or not 100% confident, buy this book.
