Neither for new or experienced owners
For anyone who has not condidered using treats to condition a rat to perform "tricks", this book will contain at least one useful idea - but seeing that I've just told you about that, it is now left with no useful suggestions...
What a new rat owner needs to know is how to teach their rats to trust them, to enjoy being handled and picked up, to WANT to be handled and picked up. This books touches so briefly on the subject that a new owner would be no more knowledgable after reading it. Which implies that the book might be aimed at a more experienced owner - but the remainder of the book is full of suggestions and "ideas" which would patronise any but the most inexperienced owner.
So in summary, not enough help for the new owner, not enough ideas for the experienced owner.
Training your pet rat: a very good read
This book informs you on how it's best to train your rat. It uses easy to read descriptions and would reccomend it to first time rat owners. My only critisism is that a few of the pictures are a bit dull but apart from that it is a wonderful read.
It's ok
I've had rats as family pets before and i know how great they are so i went out and purchased a couple. I figured i might need some help as they were female and i've only had males before so thought this book may come in handy.
It's ok to an extent but i feel alot of the information is pointless. Reading through the book i couldn't help but feel like i was reading a kids book. All together the book is quite good as it does offer some useful tips, particularly the tips on how to make the cage great for pretty cheap. However if your just referring to the book now and again i think it is a bit pointless as individually the tips offered don't really work that well and I found that alot of the processes it suggested were more of a hinderence such as how to handle the rats so that they won't be scared of you anymore. Rats, like people, are unique so what works for some rats may not work well for others suggesting that the writer hasn't done a great amount of research.
Overall it is a good book, but if you do buy this book you should probably get another book that is more detailed so you can gain a wider knowledge. If you've had rats or have had some for a while it's probably not a great deal of help but if you don't want a heavy read then it's probably the book for you.
hope this helps
