I would like to mention a few things...
I liked this book a LOT better than some of its contemporaries - in particular the range of ratty ailments is very well covered, perhaps unsurprising as Dr. Viner is a vet!
A few little things in the book I feel could be improved - the selection of colours is not comprehensive but would be near impossible to cover, with nearly 50 recognised colours, markings, fur types etc.
The section on introducing rats to each other was nice to see, as too many books skim this or ignore it altogether, although I would have liked to see more emphasis on the importance of keeping at least two rats. They are not solitary animals and will pine if kept alone. Also, wood shavings are suggested as ideal, whereas they are not recommended for any small rodent anymore due to their link with respiratory problems.
Tanks are suggested but most rat fanciers agree that cages are more suitable, as rats can scale them and they allow in more air. Also, cleaning out the rats as often as suggested in this book may in fact cause them to creat more mess to compensate, as scent is very important to them.
Other than these couple of points, I found this book highly superior to many others on the market.
A very good care book for young rat keepers
I found this book contained all necessary topics you need to care for a pet rat. The way in which the book is designed and written makes it a very good book for the younger rat keeper to understand and use. The large number of colour photographs also added to the interest of the book.
