Customer Reviews
Jars of Clay have found their sound!
'If I Left The Zoo' is a fantastic blend of well-crafted pop such as the amazing single 'Unforgetful You', to the quiet bluesy piano of 'Sad Clown', which will get you yearning for as much of the bands music as possible. The album is special in the way that it can be used as a partner with almost any emotion you may be feeling. The quiet guitar picking on 'River Constantine' is a real tearjerker, and the before mentioned 'Sad Clown' is probably one of the best songs the band has ever written. The vocals are often accompanied with a gentle, haunting background voice that will touch your heart. All songs are well-written with touching lyrics. Undoubtedly Jars of Clay's most musically matured album, and not as main-stream as other efforts.
A great album
More poppy than the last two, this has some great choruses. Collide, Unforgetful You, Famous Last Words and Alright are great uplifting numbers, whilst goodbye, Grace and Constantine are smooth and relaxing. Sad Clown is certainly creative and shows that the Jars can evolve. Whoever I play this record to likes it so go buy it.
Worth Owning If You Are A Jars Fan
Jars of Clay like several other bands were unfortunate in that they achieved such musical excellence with their first effort that they are never going to live upto that with latter albums and this is sadly the case with If I Left The Zoo.
I say sadly but I don't wish to give the impression that this is a bad album, merely that Jars Of Clay was outstanding.
As for this, it is a marked improvement on their second effort, Much Afraid, and is closer to the original both in terms of their sound. I enjoyed pretty much the whole thing, with a standout track for me being Sad Clown. Again, they are lyrically worth listening to, and the music is solid enough.
I would be happy to recommend this to both Christian and secular music fans. Jars continue to be one of the only Christian bands capable of making music that can hold it's own with the majority of mainstream music.
