Synopsis
Based on a novel by Elmore Leonard, TOUCH chronicles a young former Franciscan monk's return to Los Angeles following years spent in a remote jungle monastery. Charlie Lawson--or Juvenal (Skeet Ulrich), as he is known--takes a job in a rehab center, where he discovers stigmata on his palms and a gift for healing when he restores a blind woman's sight. As word of his miracles gets out, con man Bill Hill (Christopher Walken) sees money in these divine occurrences and sends promoter pal Lynn Faulkner (Bridget Fonda) to infiltrate Juvenal's world and find out if he's authentic. In true farcical style, she falls for him in the process. What follows are many slightly zany attempts to capture Juvenal and his powers by a religious zealot and two sharklike reporters. Surprisingly slick and light, TOUCH is highlighted by a knockout supporting cast, filled with cool dialogue, and enhanced by hip production design. Director Paul Schrader once again looks at religion in the context of the modern world--this time with a sense of humor--in this fun and original film.
Customer Reviews
An overwhelming spiritual journey. I was moved to tears.
This delightfully crafted epic, left me awestruck in it's simplicity, yet captivated by it's enticing plotlines, and unprecedented twists. Ulrich shined, a truly mesmerising performance as the monk who changed so many lives, including my own! This film certainly deserves more than the panning it was given by the critics.Should prove to be an unequivocal enduring classic!
Touch - Touching
I really enjoyed this film it was very touching. The characterisations were well done by all. Christopher Walken managed to chew the scenery excellently. An all round entertaining and feelgood movie
A Refreshing Look at God, Faith, Love and Media
Don't be fooled by the subject matter - an ex-monk, who can heal the sick by touching them, but suffers stigmata each time, gets caught up in a whirl of religious fanatics, big-business evangelists and ratings-hungry media - this is a sweet and touching romantic comedy! Leave it to Paul Schrader to find a way to do some heavy soul-searching without getting heavy-handed, yet always remaining quirky as we know him from his dramas. A wonderful supporting cast (Christopher Walken, Tom Arnold, Janeane Garofalo, Lolita Davidovich and Gina Gershon) adds color and texture to the story without detracting from the quiet chemistry going on between Skeet Ulrich and Bridget Fonda. When Ulrich says without grandeur that he believes in God and miracles, you don't even think twice about it - you believe every word he says at face value. A rare performance.
