An excellent read
Many of us have guiltily spent hours watching one video after another on YouTube. Getting sucked into watching just one more video of cats, dancing toddlers, movie stars, music videos, nostalgic TV ads... Here's a book that helps explain why. Youtube is a phenomenon that even those who aren't online are aware of, having gathered a considerable reputation as a source of hilarious homemade movies by wannabe stars. It has also been in the news in the last year over allegations of copyright violations. With a cited 90 million users it has a worldwide audience. Therefore, the publication of this book is a useful analysis of a global phenomenon. The essays in the book cover the multiple uses of YouTube, and how it functions as a new media platform useful for sharing, archiving, creativity and promotion. Coming from a wide range of backgrounds the authors explore the many issues and ideas of this online space. It is well edited, supported by a curated website and the essays are of a consistently high standard. Aimed at an academic audience, the book has filled a gap and is a welcome addition to the field.
