Customer Reviews
Classic French Flashback!
This film was thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable! Depardieu and Dewaere are a couple of aimless rogues who wander around the 70's French countryside causing havoc. They steal cars for fun, find various ways to obtain Francs, and use and discard women like you wouldn't believe. There are many sex scenes which are often hilarious (as in Rita, Sue and Bob too). If you like obscure but unique French film-making at it's best, you wont go wrong with this gem.
Depardieu the only real reason to watch
Saw this film as a teenager and enjoyed it. 15 years later it's pretty much lost its charm. But it's worth seeing for Depardieu's performance alone: roughneck charisma from beginning to end. Modern audiences will have a problem with the sexual politics: the three main female 'characters' in the film are defined respectively by the loss of virginity, the ability to experience orgasm and menopause; ie female identity is defined entirely by male sexual desire. The rather aimless picaresque gets a bit tiresome after a while, but some viewers might enjoy the freewheeling approach to plot and the Grapelli soundtrack certainly adds a lot. An interesting but rather uneasy viewing experience then...and Depardieu brutally brilliant.
One of the best french films of the seventies
Les Valseues have key elements to be a classic:
Excellent performances (Depardieu outstanding, Deweare almost touching perfection, Miou Miou is unforgettable)
Completely original script.
Superb direction and control of an almost totally implausible story.
One of my favorite films of all times. Adult themes, outrageous situations, drama, passions and relationships tested to the limit.
