Customer Reviews
Wondering where to start with Christy Moore? Right here!
It seems as if Christy Moore has been part of the folk scene for almost as long as there has been a folk scene; but periodically people will come along who have yet to hear him for one reason or another. This CD would be an ideal introduction, containing many of his greatest songs and covers.
In his sleeve notes Christy describes his recent tours with guitarist Declan Sinnott as "the most satisfying period of my working life". This shows in the songs here. Newer songs like "Strangeways" and "Yellow Triangle" sit well alongside great classics - an outstanding version of Natives and the ethereal, timeless Bright Blue Rose.
If you caught Christy and Declan on the 2006 tour you will know just how good this is likely to be. And it IS that good.
very occasionally 5 is not enough
Christ Moore is a king among singers. He communicates to his audience almost telepathically the joy, despair, love, injustice, hatred, bigotry, foolishness and hope that his vast repertoire holds and his audiences show him the utmost respect; there is a churchlike silence while he sings and an eruption of sustained applause at the end of every song. This great double cd set comes as near as dammit to capturing the unique atmosphere of one of his concerts and has enabled me to relive my experience of one many, many times over.
There are 35 wonderful songs here, and something for everyone be he freedom fighter, hopeless romantic, addict, ex-addict, political activist, Irelandophile, or simply seeker of the truth. But if you're at all interested in Christy you probably have leanings or experiences in many of these directions and you will love this record.
Some of my particular favourites are:
Yellow Triangle - a most perfect song written by Christy with a simple unmistakable message ; speak out in the face of persecution and prejudice
Veronica - tribute to the Irish journalist who took on the drug barons and paid with her life, brave actions and a brave song
Two Conneeleys - fishermen brothers swallowed with their currach by the Atlantic seethe and swell, `try to understand God's will'
Beeswing - a beautiful Richard Thompson song of a free-spirit who could be loved but not owned
Smoke And Strong Whisky - the Irish by the Irish
North And South - love and prejudices
Stitch In Time - a wife's revenge on her drunken pig of a husband
Butterfly - Handsome Family's tragi-comic Christmas day with an alcoholic
Cry Like A Man - cry like a man
Plus of course the Christy classics: Ride On, Bright Blue Rose, Missing You
For an added bonus every track bar one features the brilliant electric and acoustic guitar work of Declan Sinnott who has total empathy with the material and helps bring the songs to life in a special way.
Christy is truly remarkable live and this album bears that out beyond any shadow of a doubt.
Absolutely amazing
I have the DVD version of this and it is truly amazing. So many beautiful songs, sung with such heartfelt emotion. This man is a legend. Enough said.
