My Favourite Books
BirdsongBirdsong by Sebastian Faulks
Buy new: £4.79 / Used from: £0.01
Superbly written story and characters. Although harrowing at times, 'Birdsong' is a novel that will I will continue to reread for many years.
Jane Eyre (Oxford World's Classics)Jane Eyre (Oxford World's Classics) by Charlotte Brontë
Buy used from: £0.01
In my opinion, 'Jane Eyre' is the most fantastic love story ever written. A refreshing change from the sugar-coated world of Mr Darcy and the like in Austen's novels.
Memoirs of a GeishaMemoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
Buy new: £3.99 / Used from: £0.01
Golden's prose is some of the most beautiful I have read and this is a novel that can be enjoyed even after enjoying the film.
Light in August (Vintage Classics)Light in August (Vintage Classics) by William Faulkner
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £2.49
Faulkner's atmospheric descriptions of the American South draw the reader into his world and make you feel like you are sitting within the story. Not an easy read but so worthwhile.
OutOut by Natsuo Kirino
Buy new: £5.96 / Used from: £0.01
Not my usual choice of book but very well written and full of tension. An excellent modern novel that is easy to read (if you don't mind gore).
Wuthering Heights (Wordsworth Classics)Wuthering Heights (Wordsworth Classics) by Emily Bronte
Buy new: £1.99 / Used from: £0.01
More difficult to read than 'Jane Eyre' but just as fantastic. Bronte's novel deals with social class, passion and the supernatural to name but a few themes.
Great Expectations (Penguin Classics)Great Expectations (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: £4.50 / Used from: £2.44
Dickens wrote characters like no other author ever will and the relationship between Pip and Estella is so complex and fascinating I will certainly be rereading this classic.
Lord of the FliesLord of the Flies by William Golding
Buy new: £3.99 / Used from: £0.01
A book that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike, 'Lord of the Flies' focuses on the conflict between rules and instinct; civillisation and savagery.
The Bell JarThe Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Buy new: £4.49 / Used from: £0.01
A disturbing semi-autobiographical account of a young American woman's breakdown.
