Customer Reviews
A Superb Collection
The bulk of Kreisler's recordings for HMV are included in this boxed set. That is to say the Berlin and London concertos, the Beethoven sonatas with Fritz Rupp and two CD's made up of shorter pieces - compositions by both Kreisler himself and others. The remastering is perfectly acceptable and the booklet contains details of recording dates and an excellent essay on Kreisler by Duncan Druce.
Kreisler was one of the greatest violinists of the last century and probably the most loveable. Although not a virtuoso in the style of Heifitz, his love for the music he is playing shines out of every bar and his tone is surely the most beautiful ever recorded. Kreisler was of a generation that believed that music making should be a dialogue between composer and interpreter and that individual response to the score was vital. There could be no such thing as a definitive performance but only one that was 'right' for the moment.
There are many such moments in this excellent set which should be in the collection of all lovers of great violin playing. An essential purchase.
