Philips Avent Airflex Feeding Bottle
Philips Avent Airflex Feeding Bottle Philips Avent Airflex Feeding Bottle

Many mothers introduce some bottle feeding into their babies' lives. Some may wish to express their own breast milk to allow someone else to give baby a feed; some may be advised by their health visitor or paediatrician to give supplementary bottle feeds and some mothers may choose not to breastfeed.

The Airflex Feeding Bottle has a built-in Airflex valve that works with your baby's natural feeding rhythm to promote healthy, active feeding. Learn how Airflex works.

Milk, not air, flows into your baby's tummy.
Our Natural Feeding Bottles and teats utilize Airflex technology, which works with baby's natural feeding rhythm to promote healthy, active feeding and reduce colic. The built-in Airflex valve allows your baby to control milk flow more like breastfeeding, which can help reduce overeating and spit-up.

How it works
As your baby feeds, the unique skirt on the AVENT teat flexes to allow air into the bottle, preventing any vacuum build-up. This allows your baby to suckle continuously and effortlessly, almost as at the breast. Listen for the gentle whistling sound and watch the air bubbles burst on the surface of the milk. That’s your guarantee that the air is being released into the bottle – not into your baby’s tummy.

Philips Avent Airflex Feeding Bottle

Philips Avent Airflex Feeding Bottle Philips AVENT bottle reduce baby wind or colic
Feeding bottles, whether they are angled or straight, need air inside the bottle to replace the milk your baby takes. When your baby drinks, a vacuum is formed in the bottle causing the teat to collapse, restricting milk flow. Unable to receive milk, a frustrated baby's natural reaction is to suck more vigorously which in turn increases the amount of air swallowed. Most bottles need air to flow in through the hole in the tip of the teat to remove the vacuum, interrupting the flow and rhythm of sucking.

Philips AVENT teat's unique one-way air valve opens and closes with baby's natural suckling rhythm, letting air flow into the bottle as your baby drinks, preventing the vacuum from forming. The result is less air in the tummy and a decrease in colic. A recent clinical study demonstrated that at two weeks of age, babies fed with the Philips AVENT bottle showed a trend to less colic, and had a behaviour closer to breastfed babies.

Benefits of Philips AVENT Feeding Bottle
  • Philips AVENT Airflex Teats are made from soft pure medical grade silicone and shaped to mimic the breast in form and function.
  • Breast fed babies will accept the AVENT Airflex Teat more easily and will happily go back to the breast, so combining breast and bottle feeding is easier with AVENT.
  • The Philips AVENT bottle with its award winning wide-neck design, is stable and easier to hold, making filling and cleaning easy.
  • Clear markings on the bottle ensure accurate measurement.

Choosing the right teat for your baby

Remember that age indications are approximate as babies develop at different rates. You will know when your baby is ready to move onto a faster flow rate because he or she will try to suck harder to get the milk more quickly. They may also show signs of tiredness or frustration during feeding.

Philips Avent Airflex Feeding Bottle Color coded packs help you to find the correct flow rate teat for your baby.

Newborn Flow
Extra Soft Silicone Teat Ideal for newborn and breastfed babies of all ages

Slow Flow
Extra Soft Silicone Teat Ideal for newborn and breastfed babies of all ages

Medium Flow
Soft Silicone Teat Ideal for bottlefed babies at 3 months of age and up

Fast Flow
Soft Silicone Teat Offers a faster flow for older babies

Variable Flow
Soft Silicone Teat- Slot Cut Provides an extra fast flow and accomodates thicker liquids. Flow rate can be varied by turning the bottle to align the I, II, or III markings on the teat with the baby’s nose. Philips Avent Airflex Feeding Bottle

Easy to combine breast and bottle
The naturally shaped teat, combined with the fact that your baby controls milk flow more like breastfeeding, makes it easier to combine breast and bottle.

Simple hygienic assembly
Because the Airflex valve is built into the teat, there are less parts for you to assemble and clean, making the AVENT Airflex Feeding Bottle ultra-hygienic and simple to use.

    Buy the cheaper version1
I bought this item in September 3 months before my baby was due. After 3 months of use the appliance stopped working. The LCD display stopped lighting up and the whole unit was not working at all. Item had to be returned. In my opinion the cheaper version works just as good and you can sterilise as you want to just as same, or as an alternative buy the microwave steamers which work good for travelling too and less likely to break down unless your microwave packs in.

Nice idea, but doesn't work in practice1
We bought the IQ24 2 months before the birth of our baby boy. We didn't actually unpack and start using it until he was born. The idea that you can leave items in the steriliser for up to 24 hours, with the unit repeating its cycle every 6 hours sounds good at first. However, in practice it just doesn't work out like that. Our son wanted feeding at least every 4 hours, sometimes every two hours. So we'd take a bottle out of the steriliser to make a feed, but then we'd have to set a cycle running again since we'd opened the lid and the other items were then considered no longer sterile. We also found that we had to keep topping up the water level to 200ml quite often. I suppose we could have left it to run automatically when it reached the next 6 hour milestone, but he would have wanted another feed before then.

So we found ourselves taking out a bottle and running another cycle every time. Sadly, some of the Avent plastic bottle collars didn't like this and after a while the shiny white plastic started to turn powdery.

After 3 weeks of use we then noticed water leaking out of the bottom of the unit. This was swiftly followed by the LCD display not lighting up, or the button not responding when pressed to start a cycle. I can only assume the unit was not water-sealed properly and water had got into the electrics (VERY DANGEROUS!!). Maybe this is an isolated incident and we just happened to get a faulty unit, but this should have been noticed in quality control. For the money (£60!!) this is not what we expected...especially since we've only been using it for 3 WEEKS!! Not recommended at all. Since then we've returned it and purchased a much cheaper unit which does the job just the same :)

The best steriliser I've used by far (and I've been through four!)5
I simply love this item, it is a must have for any parent that needs to sterilise frequently for whatever reason. And for once, my wife totally agrees with me!

We've gone through a few sterilisers so far; including a Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Microwave Steam Steriliser which ceased to work after two weeks (and would only keep items sterile for three hours max). They were all difficult to use in that you would need to keep rinsing/refilling the units with water after each sterilisation cycle. Not so with the iQ24!

The brilliant feature of this steriliser is that it can run on a continuous cycle for upto 24 hours, as well as being simple to use (it has the one button). You put in 200ml of water using the provided jug (or any measuring jug you have to hand), set it to the 24 hour mode, and begin the cycle. (I don't quite see the point of the 6 hour mode, which is one sterilise cycle, then you need to start again with rinsing/refilling the unit).

In between, if you want to take an item out, hit the start/stop button; it will pause the sterilisation cycle. Feed your child (or use your breastpump or other items); wash and put back into the unit, hit the start/stop button, and the cycle starts again by sterilising your items. With most other units, you would have to continuously fill with water before starting again.

This works particularly well for our baby, who feeds on average between every 2 and 5 hours depending on how active she's been and what time of day it is.

We've managed to get a full 24 hours use out of the unit before needing to rinse/refill with water (I read that one person was not able to do this) - we average between 6 and 8 feeds a day. You do not need to keep topping it up to 200mls after every sterilisation cycle; only after 24 hours or if the water is running low (and the unit tells you if it is).

To top it off, the unit tells you if there is too much or too little water in it using the electronic display (it shows a kind of "U" shape to show not enough water, and an upside down "U" like an "n" to show that there is too much).

The unit comes with descaler pouches enough to last 6 months on average, as well as many bottles and a cleaning brush to keep you going for a while at least; making this a value for money buy too.

The bottles that come with this unit are fairly good in terms of anti-colic features, however our baby prefers the tommee tippee "anti-colic plus" bottles; we manage to fit in 4 of these bottles into the unit at a time (they are fairly big compared to the avent ones that come with the pack) just to give you an idea of what will fit into it.

All in all, this is probably one of the most useful baby products I've come across, and would recommend as a must buy, especially if you need to bottle feed for whatever reason.
