No frills, no fuss, just gets on with the job
Bought this sat nav as it was the cheapest TomTom there was(everyone seems to recommend TomTom),and we only wanted it for use in the UK. Very easy to use, instantly worked out a new route when we took a wrong turn. Knocked spots off the nav man we had borrowed before. Took a little bit of getting used to some of the phrases it uses, but only a minor quibble.Screen is very clear and easy to follow. Would definately recommend.
A Godsend when you're on your own
Being recently separated, I found it difficult driving to unfamiliar places using a road map with no-one else to give me the directions. This gadget was a real eye-opener, just key in the postcode or address of the place you want to go to, hit the done key and it plots out the best route for you to drive to, and gives you voice instructions with a clear, viewable map to guide where to go. And it works! Whats more it indicates speed cameras, alerting you if you go over the speed limit in speed camera areas, places to park, hospitals, you name it. Plug it into your computer with the supplied USB cable and it will update your maps and software. I run the updates as often as i can and this also works fine.
The screen is quite small but very clear. I've had it since xmas and it hasn't sent me the wrong way once. If I take a wrong turning, it quickly alters the route and guides you safely on a revised route. The range of voices offered is good. I mostly use the "Jane" voice. I like the way she gives the instruction before roundabouts, and then just when you enter the roundabout to make sure you haven't forgotten. Bless her. Much better at giving me directions than my ex!
Easy to use - just stay in the UK
I have had Tomtom on my pocket pc for a year or so and always found it easy to use. However the wife wanted an all in one unit which would be as easy to use. We tried out the cheap Garmin (Available at Halfords) and found it nowhere near as friendly as Tomtom so when the price dropped for this I decided to go for what we already know.
The Tomtom people are billionaires now and you can see why. The unit is small, easy to use, easy to see, loud, sticks very easily to the windscreen, AND it takes you from a to b. The speed camera warnings are great too although I need to update it still.
So why only the 4 stars. Well I think upgradeability is an important concept and by removing the sd slot I will never be able to use this abroad. However I still have my Pocket PC and we will be using that should we ever drive abroad. But for now this is the easiest and one of the cheapest units around.
