Cheap and irresistable
My Lego-fanatic son has almost all of these Lego Creators Mini sets; they're great value because they have three models in one, and the durable plastic case means that you can take them anywhere, unlike the annoying cardboard boxes of the normal models, which can't be reclosed.

This is my personal favourite though, because of the cute teeny car that goes onto the back of the truck.

Do be aware though, that these are really fiddly, and will frustrate littler children (and some adults) who don't have the necessary dexterity.
