Little fingers and minds will love to be stimulated by the Lamaze Discovery Book, a bright, colourful cloth book full of different shapes and textures.

The book has been developed by Lamaze International, an award-winning American Childbirth and Early Parenting Organisation, as part of its Infant Development System. The toys are specially designed to encourage development in various aspects, according to age, so that parents can select the most appropriate and enjoyable one. Lamaze identifies four phases, and the Lamaze Discovery Book is part of their Stage Three range--Moving and Doing--for babies aged six months and above.

The book has four double-sided cloth "pages", each with a "lift-the-flap" element in felt or satin-like material. For example, on the "cover" is a purple flower shape on a green background with an orange centre. Lift the flower and underneath is a multi-coloured printed butterfly. On the inside of the next "page" is an orange tabby cat on a background of broad black and white stripes. If that seems unconventional, it is an approach adopted by Lamaze after research proved that very young babies respond much more to bold colours and monochromatic patterns than to the pastels traditionally favoured by parents.

A lovely first introduction to books, the Lamaze Discovery Book develops hand-to-eye coordination, teaches about cause and effect, and aids colour recall.
