Amazon.co.uk Review
Children love Cranky, the slightly testy tempered railway crane, yet too often he's neglected in Thomas toy ranges. So it's wonderful to see Cranky given a starring role as a core accessory for the Thomas the Tank Wooden Railway Set.

This Cranky the Crane stands at a height of 28 cm, with a wooden main body and stand. Cranky's real magic comes from his fully functioning crane mechanism. The first of two separate red levers easily enable little railway engineers to rotate Cranky around 360 degrees. The second lever then lowers Cranky's hoist up and down to load and unload the cargo. The loading itself all happens courtesy of an exceptionally strong magnet, the power of which means that Cranky doesn't have to be perfectly positioned beside his cargo for your little engineer to gain job satisfaction. Naturally Cranky the Crane comes complete with his own cargo goods train with magnetic cargo.

All of this good clean pulley, lever and magnet fun does of course mean that as well as being a delightful toy, Cranky is a wonderful introduction to the world of early science and working machines.

Cranky's body detaches from the crane tower. Beware that to re-install correctly it is important that the two flat-edged grooves of crane tower and body are aligned. This is very easy to do but also easy to overlook and incorrect assembly will stop Cranky functioning properly.

A particularly good accessory to any wooden train set, Cranky the Crane combines fun, education and a lovable character to boot. Ideal for children aged 3 to 6 years old. --Victoria Mackenzie

    Mum of a Thomas fanatic4
Quite expensive but dont be put off by the price as it is well worth the money. Our 2 year old spent hours playing with cranky rotating and lifting cargo on and off the trains. Very robust and took a great deal of battering and still in great condition. A must have to a childs expanding wooden Thomas train collection

    Fun, but parental patience required4
Every kid loves this toy. The crane head rotates in a complete circle (and then back again, not around and around), and the magnet on the rope goes up and down with another crank. Ours has been in use for several years now, and I'm pleased and surprised to report that the string has not broken despite heavy use.

There is one problem with this toy (other than the hefty price). The crane head comes off very easily, and putting it back on is too fiddley for a young child. It's got a round peg which slots into a round hole, but with one slightly flattened edge so it must be lined up just so to work. The adults on hand are called over several times during each play session to reafix the head so play can resume.

Our Cranky has seen a lot of use for magnetics experiments, totally apart from his day job in wooden Sodor. Worth the cost for the years of play, as long as everyone is prepared to deal with the frequent assembly crises.

This purchase was a gift, received gratefully by a huge Thomas fan. Lots of fun with the swivel head and pulley system.
