A powerful and easy to set up unit
I needed to replace an older APC power strip type UPS as I have added a more powerful PC to my system. (The old low power UPS is now powering my router).

I bought this as it had the general power level I need and what a cracker it is! Very small box size etc.

Arrived bang on 8am in the morning (ordered at 5pm the nighth before) so I put it straight on power to charge itself up - went off and downloaded the Vista Software Pack form the APC website and then connected everything up. USB onto the system and loaded the dsoftware - 5 minutes later all was working. Did the self test and confirmed that I was protected. At 8pm (12 hours after arrival) we had one of our regular power cuts in the village where I live and lo and behold the system stayed up as I had set it to do. I was able to shut everything down safely as the PC Flat Screen (22") and network drive were all on the UPS. My router stayed powered on as it was now protected by my old UPS.

I feel completely at ease with this unit and I hardly thought I would get a live test so soon!

For the home user that has never suffered from Voltage Spikes or power cuts in the middle of saving files or generally working - you are indeed very lucy - for the rest of us - this is value for money and very worthwhile.

Totally recommended and protecting over £1000 of equipment (and data that is worth much more), total peace of mind for less than £80 - bargain. Going to get another of these for my son's set up......

does what it says on the box
An excellent piece of kit, very simple to install and functionality very good. Web site support seems good as well. Just follow the instructions and it takes about 10 minutes to set up. It has features not found on other models, like the self test and warning to replace the battery. I would recommend this.

Ideal home power backup.
Living in a rural area we experience relatively frequent power outages, often for no more than a couple of minutes, but enough to cause havoc with my media centre PC that is attached to my TV.

I have used APC equipment at my workplace and it has always served me well so I decided to try one of the small home units.
The BackUps 650va is indeed very small and light for a UPS. It is silent in operation and can easily be hidden away.

Setting up the UPS is child's play as both Windows and OSX recognise it as soon as it is attached.

The optional software is, in my opinion, the defining difference between this UPS and others. The software installed without a problem, is extremely intuitive to use and allows for all sorts of customization (that even extends to silencing audio alarms between certain times and days.)

My PC is fairly powerful and draws around 200 watts in idle mode so the UPS will only run the machine for 20 minutes but that is long enough to see me through short outages and, if the power stays off for a longer period, the software safely shuts down my PC.

The UPS is designed to protect computer equipment that utilize the standard PC power connector so, if you want to use it for other equipment, then you may need to buy different leads. (I have also put my Sky+ box through the UPS as it positively hates power outages but I needed to buy a 'special' lead.) IEC C14 Plug to Figure 8 Connector, 2m [Electronics]
