Customer Reviews
Works Well But Battery Life Could Be Better.
I will start by saying overall this is a nice unit but it has a major drawback which I will come to later. I have had a white one of these since August 2008.
The styling is very ipod like and has been constructed well enough for consumer use. Operating it is pretty simple. Press the power button and the green LED blinks until it picks up enough satellites which is usually about 30 seconds. It has a large amount of internal memory, cannot remember how much, but it is a lot. I have mine set to record every 5 seconds and a full day will use up around 1% of the storage. I have not cleared mine out since I bought it and I am only on about 30% use in total.
As for connecting it to a PC. You get a USB cable supplied and a CD with drivers etc on it. On my Windows PC I downloaded/installed the "Prolific Pl-2303 USB To Serial" drivers and DataDownloader from RoyalTek's website. Ran the DataDownloader.exe and set it to use port 4 or 6, set the device type to RGM3800 and where you want the files to download to. Power up the device, click connect, select the logs you want and click >. A status bar tells you how much it has done. From here you can either view your logged tracks and tag your photos in LOCR or use LOCR to create the KML files needed to view the tracks in Google Earth.
Now for the downside which is the battery life. It uses 2 x AAA batteries which last about 3 hours or so on fresh batteries. The problem for me is that I want to turn it on at the start of the journey/day and forget about it until I return home at the end of the day. This is not the case with this unit, invariably it has stopped logging due to the batteries being depleted because I have forgotten to check them. With it only lasting 2-3 hours the thing became virtually useless to me. I got around the power problem by adding extra batteries to it and it now lasts approximately 2.5 days with continuous use. This has obviously invalidated any warranty I had but it now suits my needs far better. I am not recommending anyone else do this.
Does what it says
I have had mine a fortnight now and am very pleased with it. It is not plug and play, but it doesn't claim to be. The set up instructions are very clear though and I am not very techie but it all worked first time.
Unlike Stef, my batteries have lasted over 5 hours. Even then they had not run out but I have put them on to recharge when I have got home.
