Manufacturer's Description

Refined IXUS style

The Digital IXUS 70 brings contemporary styling to the classic IXUS design concept. Clean lines and sharp edges combine in an ultra slim body to achieve a look of understated, timeless elegance.

7.1 Megapixels

A 7.1 Megapixel CCD sensor captures every scene with razor sharp detail, for photo quality prints up to poster size.

Ultra compact 3x optical zoom

An Ultra-High Refractive Index Aspherical (UA) 3x optical zoom lens delivers crystal-clear performance in an exceptionally compact form.

DIGIC III with iSAPS

Canon's DIGIC III processor provides lightning quick responses, superb image quality and advanced noise reduction for sharper, clearer images. iSAPS technology analyses each scene to optimise key camera settings even before a shot is taken.

Face Detection AF/AE/FE

Face Detection AF/AE/FE ensures superb people shots by automatically detecting the subjects in the frame and selecting the optimum focus, exposure and flash settings for the scene. My Category tags each image based on face detection and shooting mode for easy navigation, printing, deleting and more.

Red-Eye Correction

During playback Face Detection Technology allows you to quickly and accurately correct red-eye.

2.5" LCD

A high resolution (230,000 pixels) PureColor LCD displays richer, vivid colours with sharp definition. An anti-glare, scratch-resistant coating adds extra protection against knocks and scrapes.

Sharp low-light shooting

Shoot clear, bright images in dim conditions with ISO 1600 - ideal for parties and restaurants or where flash photography is not allowed. Use ISO Auto Shift to avoid image blur with the touch of a button whenever camera shake is predicted.

Shooting modes and My Colours

Choose from 17 shooting modes including a range of Special Scene modes, optimised for specific shooting situations. Apply in-camera colour effects to images and movies with My Colours.

Movies

Shoot long¹ VGA movies with sound. Use the Time Lapse Movie function to capture changing scenes - a flower’s bloom, drifting clouds or a bustling city street - for accelerated playback as smooth video clips.

Shortcut button

Great images in small stylish package5
As many other reviewers, I researched the web for hours when choosing a digi-camera and I am more than satisfied with The Canon Ixus 70.

    Tips for buyers

    1. Buy a 2gb SD card - Sandisk seem to be good quality and well priced. This takes the Photo capacity upto 1000 in certain modes plus 15minutes of video. Beware very cheap SD cards - my images were too precious to risk being lost to corrupt cards!
    2. The Ixus 70 is the highest Megapixel Canon model ( 7 mp ) with a viewfinder. This is really useful to preserve battery life if you are just snapping. Other models in the Ixus range only use the screen as the viewfinder, which can drain battery life.
    3. Buy a case. Th camera doesn't come with a case. I would recommend trying to find one which can also hold extra SD cards/battery.

Very impressed with this product, works stright out of the box and for once (!) the bundled software (zoombrowser ex) is a very inutitive photo storage software package.
    HIghly recommended.

    Beautiful little camera5
I bought this camera for my wife after doing some semi-extensive research into the best products of this type on the market in this price-range. I was not dissappointed - it's a beautiful little camera with stylish (and more importantly sturdy) metal casing. Moreover, i've been blown away by the quality of the pictures. I own a digi-SLR myself and was expecting the pictures from a camera of this price to be comparatively shoddy. I was mistaken - the picture quality is markedly superior to that of other point-and-shoot digis that friends of mine own. The automatic function for taking pictures is great, but there are options for more manual settings should you wish to have greater control over the camera in specific conditions. The re-chargeable battery lasts a long time, which is obviously preferable to AA-battery operated alternatives on the market.

One drawback, common to most digital cameras in this price range, is that you have to count on buying a larger memory card than the one included in the box. It comes with a laughable 32 MB card which will fit about four pictures on the high setting - but before you look elsewhere you should know that this is common practise. Thus, you will need to invest in a 1GB card if you want to go on holiday and not have to worry about image storage. Also worth noting is that you ought to buy a leather camera pouch to protect it, as there is no such item included with this product. Enjoy.

great for beginners and the more experienced5
I'm a complete beginner plus useless at technology but, inspired by the reviews here and elsewhere, bought the Ixus 70. As soon as the battery was charged - about 2 hours later - I had managed to take some photos and downloaded them onto my Mac without any problem. It's really really easy to use. This alone would make the camera brilliant - but the picture quality was also good. I've stuck with the Automatic setting and am perfectly happy with that, but my experienced camera user other half has done all sorts of complicated things with the manual settings and got wonderful results, even in tricky light conditions.

I've found that you get approx 100 pictures plus a couple of short videos on a single battery charge, so I can't imagine that the ordinary user needs a back up battery. What you do need is more memory. Again acting on the reviews here, I bought a Sandisk 2mb memory card, and this is the only area i would fault Amazon on. It's not clear until the very last moment of placing the order that the card is coming from a different supplier, and it arrived several days after I received the camera and case. However, it was about a third of the price of the high street, so worth waiting for, however frustrating.

I also bought a Loepro Napoli case for it, which fits perfectly. I love my camera! It's stylish and very small, just right for a handbag or pocket, and if I find it easy to use, then take my word for it, it is.
