If you want more than an intercomm don't buy it
Works well as an intercom. I had no problem with wind or road noise or clarity after a little adjusting of the microphone positons. Using the intercomm and a GPS (Tom Tom Rider V2) has so far been impossible. Yes I know it prioritses but the passenger headset drops off line. The Scala Q2 master logs on to the GPS but then drops the passengers headset connection. The system certainly does not cope with 4 separate blue tooth devices as quoted. Help line is a tedious online process. If you want more than an intercomm, don't buy it.
This is the Best on the Market for all Two Wheelers.
I bought this Q2 Scala Rider to Rider Intercom with FM Radio for my wife and I. My wife is a learner because we decided it would be cheaper for her to take a CBT every 2 years for her Vespa ET4 125. The rest of her tuition comes from me on my GSXR1100K via the Scala. My profession is a Despatch Rider/Motorcycle Engineer with over 15 years experience. I teach rider training in my spare time as well as designing other electronic and manufactured equipment for use on two wheels.
We are mature riders in our 40's who believe that what is written in the motorcycle press is just to promote products that fit on two wheelers whether they are good or not. Cut away all the expenditure for branded items and you are left with the basic solution for the problem being solved.
In other words, you are paying for the name rather than quality.
Why for all the aforesaid explanation? Well, this is where the Scala comes into the foray of Bluetooth Intercoms. It is a basic product that does what the instructions tell you. The Scala is not on the tip of the general two-wheeler brigade because they like to pay for branded tat.
I have assessed all the Sat Nav's, GPS, Bluetooth, and other tech stuff designed for all weathers.
We can tell you from evaluating the rest that the Scala is the best item for Bluetooth communication. It works exceptionally well without fault on our full face helmets with our mobile phones, Sat Nav and will link easily to use as an intercom system. We have measured the range and it exceeds the 100 metres as stated. Can be heard with us talking at motorway speeds inside our Nitro and Shark helmets. Fitting instructions are good but a knowledge of how your helmet has been designed will improve the quality of the fitting. The adhesive/Velcro for the speakers fail because the adhesive used is weakened by moisture. These speakers are best retro fitted with the use of Sellotape's Sticky FixersSellotape Sticky Fixers Double-sided 12x25mm 140 Pads Ref 3799 [Pack 6] which when applied become a permanent solution. Best results are achieved by firstly applying one Sticky Fixer pad to the helmet lining at the ear recess area, this way you are guaranteed maximum clearance for you ears to pass over. With a continuous pressure applied to the speaker onto the Sticky Fixer Pad for about one minute will do. Be sure to tuck away the excess speaker lead at the speaker end, so as not to snag the lead when taking off or putting the helmet back on. The boom microphone should be placed at chin level for a full face helmet and at the bottom lip area for best results. Placing the boom near any air vents will create interference.
But what we find really exciting is the fact that you can talk over one another without waiting for the other to stop talking first. The Scala is a first to keep the link after one has received a mobile phone call. It is brilliant at taking a call because the clarity is so good. After you get used to talking/listening via the intercom, taking or making a call via your mobile phone becomes easier and your concentration for judging the road becomes a peripheral vision but, if you are any good at riding two wheels, you should already have this gift because the use of peripheral vision will safe your life one day.
The FM Radio can only pick up two channels but, with a FM Transmitter you can buy for you mobile phone will increase the number of channels you can receive. With the 'Digital Switch-over' imminent the use of the FM Radio will become obsolete. There is a socket to plug in your I-pod/MP3 player. Great for any external device like the Road Angel Classic we use.
The bass of the speakers is adequate and not intrusive, as anything with more bass may give you a headache over time.
Other motorists can see the flashing blue indicator on the Scala and tend to leave you alone suspecting that you have a communication link to other riders. The Scala uses for communication allow us riders to maintain the upper hand against road-rage aggressor's. With coordination communicating via the intercom with other riders we can implement rolling road blocks and call the Police for back-up. Although we are often vulnerable on two wheels having a reliable Bluetooth Intercom such as the Scala Rider we can be rest assured that we could get the help we need in an emergency.
In an accident I had recently, I was able to convey my injuries without the removal of my helmet thanks to the use of the Scala.
The Scala is rechargeable and is easy to remove for charging via its charging socket. We have a Solar panel that trickle charges our Scala's as we ride, in doing so eliminates the battery running flat and continuous use. Ideal if you are a Despatch Rider who has to rely on communication for their livelihood's. The Scala is waterproof and robust. The rubber coating doesn't last long but a dip in liquid rubber Ronseal Isoflex Liquid Rubber Black 2.1 Litre maintains its resistance against drops onto the floor below. Obviously to modify your Scala you are invalidating your guarantee. There are so many other items that with a few mods can be used with the Scala with the use of an excellent site called instructables dot com and with the competent use of a soldering iron, you may be on your way to emulating the gadgets you already possess.
We would definitely buy another Scala Rider Q2 if ours were to ever pack up or modify it for personal use rather than the helmet.
I hope this review has given you a better understanding of this product.
Good Luck and Ride On!
Scala Q2 Headset - I like it!
I have seen the other 2 reviews and I have to say I like the Q2 headset - it works well with the Tom Tom Rider V2 and I can hear the voice commands well at well over motorway speeds in my Shoei lid (but not so well in my Caberg)and to have my Ipod on a radio transmitter playing a bit of Chilli Peppers or whatever on a long motorway trip is a bonus. I ride a 1200 GS without earplugs and I do not use the intercom facility. Tom Tom Rider v2 is useful but it creates havoc with just about any phone I have used but who wants to take calls on a bike? Not me! Just clear sat nav instructions, speed camera warnings and some music to while away motorway tedium. If you have sat nav and like music when you are riding buy one. If you don't then why are you reading this?
