Manufacturer's Description
The JBL Encounter" 2.1 is a compact high performance sound system which, connected to your desktop, iPod® MP3 player or other music source, will provide a clean, powerful sound stage.
A stereo mini jack connection also allows you to enjoy high quality audio from a variety of other devices such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms) and laptops. It's easy-to-use Touch Volume Control increases or decreases the volume with just a touch. A touch on either pad mutes or un-mutes the system and it also remembers your last volume setting even after the system shuts down.
Additional features include bass and treble controls located on the rear of the subwoofer which utilizes FCS, a Fixed Crossover Shelving topology. This allows for a pure bass adjustment that does not affect the sound imaging as the bass level increases.
The JBL Encounter combines many proprietary technologies to provide the highest quality sound, providing astonishing bass and clear accurate sound. These unique innovations include Odyssey" Transducers to give a full rich frequency response from the mids to the highest highs and a Magnum" Subwoofer Transducer to optimize for clean powerful bass response. The Patented Slipstream port maximizes port efficiency while minimizing port noise, COE (Computer Optimized Equalization) provides a rich, complete sound stage, and OCT (Optimized Compression Topology) insures clean accurate sound at high output levels. The out of this world sound system - the JBL Encounter" - is quite simply a revolution in personal sound for the desktop.

Perfect desktop speaker system that looks out of this world
When I migrated to the Mac about a year ago I decided also to move a lot of my music CD collection into iTunes and buy a small tabletop speaker system. I looked at a number of different systems but what I wanted was something that would work without a hitch with AirPort and was solid and easy to set-up and use. These speakers took all of 3 minutes to unpack and set-up, and for the last year have worked perfectly. Lets face it, aesthetics count for a lot and these speakers have a fantastic look - right out of encounters of the 3rd type. I am usually sitting right in front of these speakers (1 to 2 metres) so I'm more interested in a clear pure sound rather some blaster box with a lot of distortion. The Encounter delivers a good quality sound for a broad range of pop-type music (as I'm typing this I'm listening to Carly Simon and it sounds perfect). However classical music and in particular light quartet sounds sometimes a little hollow, but with the equalizer on ITunes you can really adjust things to get the best out of these speakers.
