Great game,needs patch though
First of all,in response to the review below:
Sys requirements call for a G5/Intel @ 1.8Ghz,so crappy performance on a G4 should not surprise anybody; the game is also a considerable CPU hog on windows.
The game itself is Civilization at its best:
All the basic concepts are still there,some annoying things like excessive corruption are gone and some new aspects,like religion have been added....and it comes in 3D :)
The gory technical stuff:
Expect audio problems(Some/most effects not audible) and on some systems unusually high CPU loads.
A beta patch has been released that takes care of some of those problems,expect a full patch very soon.
I had to rate the game with 3 stars due to the technical dicfficulties.
It's Not All Bad!
After reading several bad reviews for Civ IV i thought i should write my own. So okay, i run the game on my old iMac G5 and i have no problems, sure it's a little slow at times but when you have an old machine you have to expect that. If you have an Intel powered mac you're in a much better position to play this game, but if not like me, tinker with the settings and you should get it to work fine. My machine is by no means blazing fast. The game itself is excellent. Yes, it is a bit easier than Civ III, but played on a harder level it will balance out. There is a bit more to the game than Civ III, a bigger learning curve, but when you come to grips with that you'll appreciate the extra bit of depth to the game. It is an excellent game. Patches have been released, and so too have expansion packs. There's no reason not to buy this game.
@@@Great game but very glitchy@@@
Just got to say that this in one hell of a game if you can actually get it to run perfectly so don't be put off the game by other reviews. I have a Mac G5 and all the minimum and recommended system requirements for the game except for speed, which i fall very slightly behind the recommended speed, and this shows. The game takes quite a long time to do just about anything, inluding 'quick loads', which aren't quick at all, i usually have to wait about 2 minutes for it to load again and this is very frustrating when you have just made a samll mistake on the game and want to go back a turn or two.
Also, i am having a problem playing civilization 4 online, the game boasts about its online capabilities but doesn't seem to support and kind of service (like gameranger) where you can meet players from around the world and have a game with them. So if you don't have the ip address of anyone with the game then your stuffed when it comes to online play.
~~~(i bought the game before the uk release date in america and this doesn't have any kind of online service, if the uk version has got something different could someone please tell me - email: joe.hutton@tiscali.co.uk (no spam please))~~~
Other than the above two problems the game is great, just keeping fingers crossed now that aspyr release a patch to fix a couple of the glitches or I can afford a higher performance computer
