Laughter Galore
My only experience to date with this classic film has been the VHS version, so cannot say anything about the newer format. But as sheer comedy, the great Sir Compton MacKenzie's work sits well on the screen. For me, one of the most uproarious scenes is where the 2 I/C of the home guard's mother, a dour Presbyterian, forbids him to leave the house on Sunday, so his commander is unable to thwart the plans of the conspirators who plan to store the eponymous whisky windfall. Not to mention the clock striking midnight, ringing in the Sabbath, just as they are about to launch out to recover the same whisky; and all they can do is gaze wistfully out to where the "treasure" is afloat, just out of reach! And marvel at the ingenious ways they find to hide it from the customs and excise officials. Glorious stuff! What a pity Ealing Studios aren't putting out such delights any more, but, thanks to modern technology, we can enjoy these "golden oldies" once again. A "must have" for anyone who, like myself, has such wonderful memories of old-style British humour. Treat yourself now!
Whiskey Galore
A true classic with wonderful Scottish humour. I can watch it again and again, and get something new out of it every time.
Having seen it on the telly many timesI found the quality of black and white much better on the DVD.
It's a really "feel good" film, perfect for a dark and windy evening.
`TIS A SAD DAY IS THE SABBATH
Ealing Studios produced some of England's (if not all) best loved comedies. Whisky Galore is the cream of the crop and a film that all the family can watch without fear of foul language or sex and nudity (not that I don`t mind a bit in the right context). If you missed this at the cinema, and most of you will have done, or you missed it on the tele., do not miss this chance, it may well soon go out of copy.
