Worth the money
After exhaustive research, I decided to buy the X1's based on the fact that they are cheap, not wireless (I already have enough batteries to recharge) and recommended by many. I have owned my pair for two days now and I feel I am ready to give my opinion on them.
I first tried them on GTA IV by putting on 'Hysteria' by Muse and driving round in a mean-sounding muscle car. I have to say that at first, I was a little underwhelmed. I didn't like the way the microphone ends up over the middle of your mouth as opposed to the side of it on a standard headset. I was also put off by the huge amount of bass produced by the amplifier. But the more I played, the more I started picking up subtle details which my ordinary TV speakers would never be able to detect.
If you don't like bass, these headphones aren't for you. But after a while I got used to it and realised that they only really use bass when it's needed. The more mid-range, less dynamic sounds come through clearly, like a car backing into another at low speed in GTA IV. I tried them on Halo 3 and got a greater sense of how they distribute sound; what was once 'distant gunfire' is now 'sounds like they're near the sword' if you catch my drift. They're even more useful in that sense on Call of Duty 4.
So the game sound is good. It's not surround sound, but you can tell where the sound is coming from and the sound itself is good, which is fine for £45 if you ask me. But of course, these headphones also incorporate Live Chat, which is sometimes just as crucial to hear as in-game sound. I have to be honest, the voices aren't as clear as they are with my standard Xbox Live wired headset. The bass makes the voices sound more 'boomy' and this can make those with deep voices harder to understand at times. BUT, you can have the voice volume higher than you can with a regular headset and the voices go to both ears instead of one. Overall, the wired headset is better for hearing voices but it's not a huge difference. As for the mic, my friends have all told me that I sound exactly the same as I did with my wired headset.
I'm not pretending these headphones are perfect, but try standing underneath an airstrike on CoD4 with these on and tell me you aren't impressed. If you don't like lots of bass, some wires or stereo sound then don't buy these headphones. If you don't mind any of those things, and want a cheap, comfortable solution to playing quietly at night then you should buy these headphones.
Build Quality 5/5: They feel light but sturdy.
In-game sound 4/5: Never again will you say 'where is that guy shooting from?'
Voice chat sound 3/5: Not as clear as the standard wired headset, but still fine most of the time.
Ease of use 5/5: Super easy to set up and start playing.
Value for money 5/5: Definitely worth the cash.
Overall: 4/5
Like every product, has a few drawbacks.
The sound quality is great and gaming is at a new level, say I am playing call of duty and I was confused and scared when I heard the russling of footsteps... NO LONGER! you can detect and pinpoint where they are, sneak up and pop em. It is like being at the movies.
Drawbacks. Sometimes in xbox sessions the left earphone will not produce sound, or the mic will not properly work, (turning xbox off and on again fixes these problems however) But it still rises cause for concern, as it is an expensive item.
Around my ear lobes hurt! I don't know about everyone else or wether its my big head or not but these headphone hurt the rim of your ears after long gameplay sessions, I find myself constantly and wkwaarding shuffling them about to comfort me. (I have normal sized ears lol)
As you can see, it gets 5/5 for fun, I love bass when listening to anything.
One more thing, I always like to have the sound on at its highest possible and I was dissapointed that family members from the hallway could hear my headphones quite clearly creating noise, and I ad doors shut and all, and I am a distance away from the door. Oh well.
The value, now heres a positive, these bad boys will probably last several years, what makes them so good? you will never stop using them. They are not a get bored of it thing like a consule game (around the same price) These are more as tools, just as an everyday knife you would use to chop your dinner up or what not. These the same as every day you are listening to sound, you use these, its not something you get bored of. Thats a huge plus and makes the value so immense. As with say an xbox game gets boring within the week!
Sorry for the 3-star that may be a little harsh, but the MINOR niggles I experience I feel it is only fair to let the customers know this before buying. I still prompt whoever has interested to buy these though.
USe when listening to anything.
Watching a movie,
Playing a game.
Gaming on pc
On your pc for whatever reason.
Listen to music.
watch tv,
Such a wide use of these things and therefore recommend them, 3 star overall but 5-star fun.
Excuse the essay, I just like giving a detail review/feedback for future customers, as I would want to know what I am buying ;)
turtle beach x1 headset
bought this headset just to play call of duty 4
and ive got to say its improved my playing ten fold
you can hear a pin drop the other side of the map
the cables are a little messy but its a lot better than buying a load of batteries as the x3s use em up like mad
