Customer Reviews
Mmmm Not Really Samsung...
I saw this monitor (well, the larger 226BW) in PC World, and I was blown away by how crisp and clear the display was. Really good blacks, crisp whites and vibrant colours. No (minimal) backlight bleed. Top Notch. However 22 inch was probably going to be slightly too big for me, so I went for the 20". Can't lose, can I? Ordered from Pixmania UK, via Amazon.
Delivery was quick (3 days) and I eagerly opened the box. There it was, resplendant in mirrored piano black. Looking every inch the class act, I connect the supplied vga cable, swapped the Euro power cable...
Hold on! Euro power cable? But I bought this from Pixmania UK. Except, Pixmania UK is actually Pixmania France. Oh dear... I thought I was dealing with a UK company, 'fraid not. Oh well, all is not lost. I have a spare cable with a UK plug, although they supply a rather dodgy looking adapter. Anyway, time to see what it looks like.
First thing I notice is during the Windows XP boot screen (the black one with the blue bar)there is a large arc of light seeping through the display from the backlight, at the top of the acreen. Oh dear, oh dear. Ever the optomist, I decide to check the internet for some guidance on the monitor setup (No english manual) oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I'm met with a barrage of posts on various forums about the "Panel Lottery" you have with Samsung monitors.
Now I'm not naive enough to believe that Samsung make all their own panels, but it seems there is a clear difference between the quality of the screens used. Most report that the Samsung panel, denoted by an S on the rear panel, has little or no backlight bleed at all, and is fairly uifrom in it's colouring from top to bottom. My screen is an A model. The panel is made by AU Optronics, Chinese, I believe. If you enter the secret engineer mode, it gives you the actual model number of the panel used. I took this to the AU Optronics website, which infomed me that i had a 5ms (not 2ms) Panel. Now I'm not using this for anything other than light photo-editing and general work, so 3ms is not going to make much difference. The issue I have is Samsung blatently selling a product with inferior parts. The screen has 2ms emblazoned all over it, but Au Optronics state it's a 5ms panel. So what else is different? Less backlight bleed? More uniform colouring? No buzzing at lower brightness (sorry, I forgot to mention the buzzing)Well according to countless forums, yes. The Samsung made panel is FAR superior to the AU Optronics panel. There's also another manufacturer in the mix, Chemei (sp.) denoted by a C on the rear. These are slightly better it seems. But they all cost the same.
Just out of interest, I head back to PC World to check what panel is in the display model. Quel suprise! An S panel. Now I wonder why that is? If I'd know about this before buying, I would never have bought it. Which brings me back to Pixmania. What's that? "Send it back",I hear you say. "Get a refund!". Well, normally I would. However Pixmania don't seem to want you to send anything back. Their returns policy states that any item, must be returned at the customers expense. Then, the item will be tested by their technicians. Thsi could tahe up to 4 weeks. If they deem there is a prblem you may get a refubd. Just type "Pixmania Problems" into Google, sit back with a coffee and a packet of digestives and have a good read. Ther are litterly thousnads of disgruntled Pixmania customers, still waiting for refunds and being given the runaround. I'm not prepared to go through that.
So, reluctantly, I am keeping the monitor. It's not actually that bad, once you get used to it and have it calibrated.
However this whole episode has left a very nasty taste, and I will definitely think twice before buying Samsung again.
As for Pixmania, well they have lost another customer. Judging by all the other reviews,I'm not sure they'll be that bothered.
Cracking monitor
Before i bought this monitor (from Dabs, ahem) i read about the A,C and S panels. After extensively researching it would appear that it affected the SM226BW panels only. I can't actually see a panel indicator on the back of the monitor. I have a superb display from my 8800GTX card and DVI connector. I mainly use it for gaming and it brings out hitherto unseen levels of detail. As a reference point i had a fast 2m Viewsonic TFT beforehand and the difference is really astonishing. I would recommend one of these monitors but if you can the bigger monitor is not a huge amonut of ££ over this one. Room size dictated my purchase and i think its superb. Can't comment on Pixmania though..
Amazon only seems to sell A panels
Really if you want the real Samsung don't buy this product
Samsung are now only shipping A + C panels. The reviews about this monitor being sweet are based on a lie. Yes the S panel is sweet but you are unlikely to get one now.
The A panel has so much back light bleed I could hardly enjoy a movie on it with out the light spoiling the picture. Dont blame Amazon. Sumsung are the ones ripping us off!! Poor show Samsung.
