Steer clear unless you like brews that taste awful!
Purchased this product about a week before Xmas as the old kettle had given up the ghost (hard water area).
First impressions were OK, especially for the price. Yes it seemed somewhat plastic in construction but felt solid enough and poured well. Followed the instructions regarding first use (boil, rinse, discard, repeat etc) but, even after a week there was an awful plastic taint present in the water that just would not go away.
That and the colour changing feature that really isn't...
The plastic window reacts to heat and turns a kind of blue washed out with red. Very poor.
This kettle is definitely going back for a replacement!
Kettle (downgraded to 1 star - see update in review).
A value for money kettle with colour changing water level panel. Blue when cold, then turns red as water nears boil, then slowly goes back to blue as water cools.
It's a kettle, it boils water, it does the job just fine.
REVIEW UPDATE 06 MAY 2009: After a couple of months of use, the colour changing panel no longer changes colour!! It remains red the whole time! It's still a kettle, it still boils water. Though, think the colour panel should last longer than 2 months :-(( Dissatisfied.
Ok kettle but misleading advert - UPDATE - No longer changes colour
The kettle boils water as you would expect and it is pretty quick at doing so although it is quite noisy. I have noticed that the water needs completely changing every day so you cannot just keep topping it up. If it is not changed daily, the tea/coffee tastes funny. My old Swan kettle did not have the same taste problems. The filter is very awkward as the lid gets in the way. I could see the kettle lid getting broken easily if not careful when removing the filter.
WARNING: The illumination is not very good and adverts/pictures are quite misleading. It DOES NOT illuminate red when it is hot like the advert/picture seems to indicate. It will NEVER look anywhere as blue or red as the pictures, they are significantly enhanced.
Here is how it works - There are two WHITE LEDs inside the kettle that light up when the kettle is switched to boil. These lights go out when the kettle has boiled. At least it does not waste electricity. The window on the side of the kettle is made from some kind of semi-transparent plastic that changes colour depending on the temperature. When the kettle is cold, the plastic is quite blue although when the white lights turn on, it looks like a very light Blue/White colour and nothing like the pictures on the web site or box. When it is hot or nearing boiling, the plastic turns ever so SLIGHTLY red although it is virtually unnoticeable. It never turns red and the best I could describe is a very, very pale pink. In fact it is that pale that if you try and re-boil when it is hot, the side windows actually looks white.
UPDATE: Like another reviewer, my kettle window is now permanently tinted pink indicating it is hot. I think that as the colour changing feature is its main selling point, it should last more than ONE month!!!! It is now just a kettle that lights up when boiling water.
