They've improved it!
My old Dualit kettle looked very much the same as this one, and after seven or eight years of sterling service something went bang inside its base and that was that - time to replace it.
The kettle looks great - pleasingly retro, just like the old kettles you used to see bubbling on the stove. The question everybody asks when they see it is "does it whistle?" Answer: no (thankfully!)
Most of the kettle is made of highly polished stainless steel, and be warned - it does get very, very hot, so don't touch any shiny parts when the kettle is boining! The handle and knob on the lid (note that the lid can be removed to fill the kettle - you don't fill it through the spout - and it is completely removed, so doesn't just hinge away) are made of black plastic and remain cool while the kettle is in use. There are also two clear windows in either side of the kettle, allowing you to see how much water is inside, and also a red LED light beneath these indicated whether the kettle is switched on or not. Earlier versions of the kettle, such as my old one, didn't have the windows or LEDs.
The kettle sits on a black plastic base, and in the centre of this is a circular lump which acts as the plug, fitting into a hole in the base of the kettle itself. This is a great design feature, as it means the kettle can be rotated on the base to suit you, and if the kettle is lifted from the base while in use the switch (the black lever on the back of the kettle, as seen in the picture above) automatically switches itself off as a safety feature.
One final thing: My previous Dualit kettle used to spurt water all over the place if you poured it whilst the water was still bubbling, but they seem to have fixed this issue now as mine doesn't appear to do this.
So why just four stars? Simple, really - £60 is a heck of a lot to spend on a kettle, and unlike Dualit's brilliant toasters this just lacks that special something. A good kettle then, but a bit overpriced.
TRADITIONAL DESIGN DUALIT KETTLE
The first thing that you notice about this product is the traditional design. I have had many similar designs over the years from other manufacturers but the thing that drew me to this kettle are as follows.
Side view windows on both side which suits left and right handed persons
Two litre capacity (most others are only about 1.5 litres)
Well balanced and well positioned handle (ideal when it contains water)
Concealed element(should help against the build up of limescale)
Looks great with the other stainless steel items we have in our kitchen
What I did not like was the price! I am not convinced that it costs so much to manufacture compared to the other brands. So are we paying for the design, only you can be the judge?
