![]() | Tap water in the UK is perfectly safe. However, it doesn't always taste, look or smell as pleasant as we'd like, and the effect can be noticeable not only in drinking water but in hot drinks and food cooked in water. The Breville Spectra Brita Filter Kettle uses Brita Maxtra cartridges for 20% better limescale reduction. . Brita water filter products use a mixture of carbon and ion exchange resin to remove hardness, chlorine, heavy metals such as lead and copper, and other organic impurities to improve the taste, smell and appearance of cold and hot drinks. |
| To ensure great tasting drinks every time, the Breville Spectra Filter Kettle features a Memo display that automatically reminds you when your filter cartridge needs to be changed. Other fantastic features include a fast boil 3kW concealed element for easy cleaning; a lid release button for easy filling; a 360° base; 1 litre boiling capacity and an easy grip handle. | ![]() |

How Far Would You Go For That Cup Of Tea
From Breville comes the Breville brushed stainless steel spectra illuminated filter kettle with Brita water technology, an impressive title for an equally as impressive home appliance. Featuring a 360 degree rotating base, BRITA Maxtra cartridges, a memo display, one litre capacity, keep warm function, and easy grip handle. Not to forget the fact that the kettle is illuminated and passes through different colours depending on what it's doing. All of which results in an attractively designed appliance ideally suited for the modern kitchen.
The Brita Filter makes the kettle ideal for those living in hard water areas, but also improves the appearance and taste of tap water in general, as well as reducing lime scale. The filters uses "carbon and ion exchange resin" to help remove chlorine, and heavy metals such as copper and lead from the water. What does this all mean? Simply we end up with purer, cleaner, and most important of all taster water all around. The filter holder is also easily removable for ease of cleaning and replacement.
As kettles go this one is actually reasonably quiet in operation, an unlike some doesn't violently shake your work surface when bringing water to the boil. Thanks to the concealed three kilowatt element the kettle is very fast in operation, which promises to keep tea junkies happy. Despite some advanced technology the appliance remains easy and straightforward to use. Build quality is excellent all around, and again looks good on the work surface. The power cord is a bit shorter than I would personally like, but it means you don't have an overly long cable running over a surface.
The fact that the kettle changes colour depending on what it's doing is a stylish and creditable attempt to living up what is generally considered to be a bland piece of kitchen hardware, but I would suggest that you switch it off at the plug when not in use to save energy.
An important fact to take into consideration is not only the initial cost of this application, but the continued cost of having to replace the Brita filters (which is recommended every month). This is most likely the biggest draw back to the kettle, but considering the sheer improvement in terms of water quality and therefore the quality of your hot drink (or whatever else) I personally feel that this is a very minor quibble considering. If your looking for an stylish and functional kettle suitable for the twenty first century, one that will improve your water quality with minimum fuss then look no further as you've found it.
Psychedelic and rather hypnotic!
First things first - this kettle is a rather weighty beast. I may have been born with the curse of the weak wrists, but it's substantially heavier than my old Braun, and on several sleepy mornings following the switch-over I almost dropped it due to the unexpected weight. Yes, I'm a klutz and we can't blame the kettle for that.
It's very easy to set up the filter system, but the thrifty housewife in me thinks that a pack of replacement filters included with the kettle would have been a nice touch and would have stopped you from feeling that you were being slowly hooked on the smooth, pure-tasting cuppa this kettle produces, and so dependent on buying filters for the rest of your life. It could all be the power of suggestion, really. In the interests of science (or maybe I have too much time on hands) I made up two cups of tea - one from this space age creature, and one from my old Braun. I brandished them at my friend - 'Drink!' I ordered. Rather perplexed, they did, and when pushed to choose which one was made with the aid of a Brita filter, they predictably went for the Braun.
The kettle boils nice and quickly, with a steady and inobtrusive hum. The lights are a different story, though! But if you're essentially an overgrown four year old with a short attention span, like me, then you may find yourself rather taken with the fluid shift of glowing colour when the kettle is operational. I must confess, I've sat in the dark while the water boils for my nightly cocoa and happily enjoyed the light show - it's really quite soothing to see the boiling water through the glass, illuminated by changing coloured lights. Then again, I may be a couple of sandwiches short of the proverbial picnic. Who knows.
All in all, very pleased with this kettle, but I've found that the true test of any kettle's mettle is longevity. How long will this one, and all its bells and whistles, last? If it can outdo my trusty Braun I'll be very happy, but we'll have to wait and see.
Making a 'brew has never been so good!
We already have a standard Brita filter that is kept in the fridge, but I was surprised at how effectively the filtration is used in this kettle. Although obvious members of the family fail to taste much difference, the 'connoisseurs' of the house (breakfast, afternoon, and evening drinkers) could instantly feel the smooth, un-hard liquid in their mouth.
An interesting aspect of the product is its Illumination using LED's. When the kettle is idle, it glows Green, but upon boiling the water, it transcends from Purple to Pink in one swift motion to tell you it's done (if you couldn't already hear it). On the note of noisy kettles, this is one of the quietest we've had as ones of the past have sounded like an aircraft taking off. It still makes some noise obviously, but no-where near as bad.
The only thing you will have to get used is waiting a minute or two for the water to trickle through the filter compartment, and then into the main boiling pot. If you're making just a pot for 2/3, then filling the compartment once is perfectly adequate. Also, as usual with the new Brita filters, don't always go by what the 'Memo' function says. Although it electronically suggest you should change your filter cart every month, their is a hint of marketing in this because all the 'Memo' device does is count down 1 month on a timer - it doesn't analyze the cart. Therefore, you could easily save yourself a couple of weeks and just replace it when you feel the taste reverting to tap water.
The best feature is surprisingly simple; the power cord is particularly short, meaning it won't trail on your work-surface! And if theirs a nasty bend in the wire, it won't affect where the Kettle sits because it can rotate 360 degrees.
On the whole, we haven't regretted choosing this kettle and if you've been impressed with Brita products in the past or just want a better tasting hot drink, this is for you.
