Customer Reviews

Norton 360 online backup does not work1
I have to agree with the first reviewer - the antivirus product is great, but the Online Backup (which was the main reason I bought this product) does not work. I have also purchased additional storage twice, reactivated the product numerous times, had the storage refunded and purchased it again, and removed and reinstalled the programme. 3 weeks in it still doesn't work. In addition the support team is in India and calls and emails in the middle of the night! The support is very poor, with technical support telling you to contact customer support and vice versa. They repeatedly tell you to do things you have already done and which do not work the third, fourth or tenth time you do them. I will keep you posted to let you know if this is resolved or I just give up!

Do NOT buy Norton 360!1
Do yourself a big favour, believe me, and DO NOT BUY Norton 360.
Here's why:

* The programme (as downloaded or on the CD) includes a major bug that, unbelievable as it sounds, makes it incompatible with Internet Explorer 7 for secure webpages (like for example Amazon!). There is now a patch for this, pumped out via LiveUpdate. However, this failed to register with my installation. After several inconclusive support chats, I was eventually told to uninstall and reinstall the entire program, and only then did the update succeed.
* The online update function that should allow you to backup your files to an online account (2 GB are included for free with Norton 360) is fundamentally broken (and a Norton technical analyst eventually acknowledged as much in a support chat).
* The backup server seems to be frequently down.
* I tried to buy additional online backup storage space, paid Symantec my money, but never received my storage space. Technical support told me to wait. Nothing happened. Technical support cancelled the order and told me to re-order the additional online storage space, which I did. I again did not receive the space I had paid for. Technical support told me to wait for a server upgrade. Nothing happened. Norton support then told me to reactivate the product (no success), reinstall the product (no success), and reinstall the product again, this time with a file cleaning routine (no success either). At that point they stopped responding to my e-mails while still having the money I paid them for something I didn't get. I eventually had to call customer care for a second refund. You cannot actually buy more storage space.
* While Norton technical support is happy to instruct you to reinstall, they don't tell you that this breaks the link to whatever files you've already backed up in your 2 GB online account - you can't get to them anymore and you can't delete them, which means you also can't free up space anymore, so you can't work within the 2 GB. Technical support was unable to address the issue and told me instead that trying to back up large chunks of data crashes the system. It is unclear to me how this relates to the reinstallation problem, but since with Norton 360 default settings its Norton 360 and not the user that decides when and how much to back up, that simply means their software is broken.
* I once e-mailed technical support with a simple question (my mistake, I could and eventually did find the answer on the internet). I received an automatic reply, prominsing me a response within 24 to 48 hours. Instead I got one, at this point rather unexpectedly, after over a month!

Ironically for a program that is supposed to run quietly in the background, I've never ever spent that much time and effort on the malfunctions of any piece of software. Conceptually, Norton 360 may be an alluring proposition, but in its current state the software belongs deep into beta testing and nowhere near a consumer. You can save many valuable hours of your life by staying clear of this product.

Surely this product is unfinished ?1
I bought this product after encountering trouble and then lack of faith in, PC Guard the free software from Virgin media. I, being a complete technophobe in terms of software, put my trust in a Norton product. what a mistake.

It all went on easy enough but when I did a manual update for virus deinitions, I kept getting an "Error 5" message. So, thinking I did something wrong, I pressed the auto fix button. This in turn said that I had " a critical componant out of date" despite my PC being fairly new. So, the program automatically puts you through to Norton for either a telephone call / email/ instant messenger enquiry. I chose to instant message, as i wanted it done and dusted and feared for my PC for having "an out of date componant".

What happened next happened TWICE over the evening. I waited from about #40 to speak to an operator, who seemed to be in Asia judging by their names. They then took remote access of my PC and could not gain any further with their pursuit, then only advising me to uninstall, clean out Norton from the registry then re-install and reboot. Obviously by rebooting this ended any conversation with Norton support, making me wait in another queue for approx an hour. After losing it with it, I left it on in its current form for the night before getting rid in the morning for another product.

However, try 'Googling' Norton 360 and Error 5 messages........it then becomes apparent that there is a problem with this product. I can only summize that this is known, considering PC World exchanged it with the seal broken, on display of pages, pages of print off's of the said problem from various forums.

I swopped it for Kaspersky Internet Suite and that has run like a dream.
