Too complicated for me
I used this book for my first year at med school, it got me through my exams, but if i was to go back i would use Gray's anaotomy.
For me the problems with this book are:
-It's too complicated, and goes into to much detail, certainly more than you need in your first year.
-It's hard to find the relavant info amongst all the excess info, so things take much longer.
-It's intimidating, by this i mean the text is very small and there's often pages and pages of it at a time, so it really puts you off.
-The diagrams aren't as clear as in Gray's, they are hand drawn/painted pictures of real specimens... and i think this makes them more confusing.
On the other and i would say the good points are:
-The regular blue boxes giving information about related clinical cases, easy to understand, great to put things in context.
-There are often tables to summarise the large amounts of text, and these speed things up alot if you want to quickly check a fact.
-The level of detail is way above that of Gray's anatomy, it makes Grey's look like a Kid's story book in comparison.
All in all, i wouldn't buy it again personally, as in my second year i've found that i actually get higher marks by getting a really good grasp of the basics from Gray's rather than being completely confused with a sprinkling of interesting, but irrelevant facts on top, which is what this book did for me!
great for 1st year medics
so many people opt for the condensed version of this book, but im glad i invested in the huge one! granted, its big and u cant really carry it around with you, but the diagrams are good, the tables etc brill.
i respond well to colour, and this book has it all! as a first year medic i've found this book ideal for anantomy, only rarely do i have to resort to another book to clarify the position of a muscle, or the branching of an artery (greys for students has amazing diagrams for the bits that are unclear, or wikipedia - that has good pics too)
all round a good investment!
physiotherapy student
everything you will ever need to ask (or would be asked during your practice and examination) is in this book. many pictures will clearly explain positions of muscles, bones and other structures in the human body, including x-rays, real life pictures and many usefull tables. this book can be used by any health care student with passion for anatomy who are not afraid to develop their knowledge to a professional level.
