Gerald Harper Lives!
I remember this series from when I was a boy. Monday nights, 9 o'clock. This second series has more punch than the first; seems much more certain about its aims. Hadleigh seems to be forever on the receiving end of inverted snobbery because of his inherited wealth and privilege. But he's a good sort and doesn't fall foul of the viewer (can't see a character like him receiving that kind of flak today, can you?). A whole series of co-stars reads like a who's who of the era: Hannah Gordon, Mike Pratt, Jane Merrow, David Langton... It's a real treat to watch good character-based drama like this. I'm already looking forward to the "sequels".
One of Yorkshire TV's finest shows
Gerald Harper is elegant and believable in the title role. This is a series which is sometimes about class and the establishment in Britain, but more than that, it is a series which tells a story. Hadleigh comes from a favourable background, but he is switched on and in touch with all of those around him. He can relate to people from all walks of life. He sometimes makes mistakes, but he learns from them.
The scripts and direction are of a very high standard and the quality of guest/semi-regular players in the cast is admirable, with the likes of Colin Gordon, Hannah Gordon, Jane Merrow, Michael Billington and Mike Pratt, to name a few. I have thoroughly enjoyed series 1 and 2 of this excellent series, and hope that series 3 and 4 will be released in the near future.
TV at its Best!
The second batch of Hadleigh stories demonstrates what a fine TV programme we had back in the 70's. Although not quite as fast-paced as some modern counterparts, this is an exceptionally well crafted series that stand up very well indeed. More please!
