Lovely pieces, shame about the board, though price reflects this
Given these hand-painted sets retail at £75 and above, at around £55 on Amazon makes these a good buy. And just as well as the board is a disappointing quality compared to the lovely hand-painted figures. Having looked around at what chess pieces, sets and boards cost, i decided to buy this set for the pieces, and in the series including 'Crusades' and 'Samurai' for example would make an interesting twist to a history lesson through chess playing and discussions about the historical references made by these sets.

If you are just looking for a lovely set to play and sit on a side table, then the pieces are worth it, but the board is not. It is a nasty piece of hardboard with silver and black printed squares, fairly poorly mounted into a cheap frame. I suggest getting yourself a decent chess board for around £30 (or more if your taste suits) from another supplier. I used Regency Chess in Bath for instance. You will need to get a chess board with squares in the region of 1.5" across to suit these pieces. Its roughly a 13" to 14" board you would look for.

So overall, an interesting teaching resource, a lovely set for the home, but if you mean to use it as something to look at as well as play, account for replacing the nasty board! Hope that helps :)
