Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Pauline Kael once took note of some romantic musical numbers in a Marx Brothers film that were intended, according to a movie executive, "for people to identify with." "What people?" she sensibly asked. One can only imagine what Kael might have to say about A Love Like Ours, a Barbra Streisand self-celebration disguised as a paean to her romance with hubby James Brolin (The Car). "When love like ours arrives, we guard it with our lives," Streisand emotes on the disc's near-title track, unavoidably bringing to mind an early South Park episode's battle against a monster-robot version of the superstar. Draped in gauzy arrangements and the occasional "soulful" (her word) Kenny G sax solo, Streisand even manages to make a few truly great songs ("The Music That Makes Me Dance", "Isn't It a Pity?") sound overbearing in this context. --Rickey Wright

Brilliant5
This is without a doubt one of the greatest collections of love songs ever made. The feeling and emotion in each song is overwhelming. This is a true masterpiece.

Barbra sings about being happily married5
This album was recorded at a time when Barbra (then just recently married) was really happy, and it shows. All the songs are happy, romantic songs that Barbra sings superbly. Barbra produced some of the tracks herself, but called upon a variety of other producers also. Despite this, the album flows well.

The brilliant duet with Vince Gill, If you ever leave me, is my favorite track here. Despite Vince's pedigree as a country singer, there is nothing remotely country about this track. However, the track that follows it, We must be loving right, is a song that Barbra decided to record after hearing the song on George Strait's Easy come easy go album. For that song, Barbra called in top Nashville producer Tony Brown, who even included a steel guitarist among the musicians.

The liner notes include Barbra's comments on each song. Among the more interesting notes, she says that the opening track was written as an instrumental, for which Barbra asked Ann Hampton Callaway to write words for. The results are quite impressive and get the album off to a great start. Also noteworthy is that The island started out as a Brazilian song, was translated into English, then had another verse added because Barbra felt the song was incomplete.

Barbra has recorded many fine albums, of which this is one. Enjoy it.

DISAPPOINTING WASTE OF TALENT1
As a Streisand fan of many years, this album of over sentimental ballads, was a great disappointment.

Ms. S's, or rather Mrs. B's, taste seems to have abandoned her amidst this over-sentimental, over-indulgent load of schmalz.

The Voice is great as ever, pity it's wasted here.
