Customer Reviews
We Didn't Know What We Had
Lanza had one of the greatest tenor voices ever but some of his later recordings were a bit dodgy. No duff stuff here I'm glad to say, every track is a winner and the sound quality is fantastic. Mario's singing of La Danza and O Sole Mio gave me goosebumps and how many singers can you say that about these days? His Ave Maria is the most beautiful on record and if there's a more romantic version of One Alone out there I'll eat my socks! I'd like to have seen his rendition of Pagliacci and Song of India included as well but that's a minor quibble. Lovely reading by C. Lee on the bonus disc, the ending almost had me in tears. To sum it up: Great singing, great photos, great liner notes, great tribute, great everything. Buy this one, you'll love it! Hope there is more to come soon. Modern tenors, hear the master voice!!
Ah Mario!
Mario Lanza was one of the most underated tenors of the last 100 years. This is a wonderful collection of his recordings when he was at his prime. No wonder he inspired Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and many other superb tenors. Just buy the CD and enjoy his exquisite voice.
Really superb
I thought Mario Lanza was one of those 'Old Fashioned' singers that my mother used to like. Recently, I went to a Wurlitzer Organ concert. The organist, Nicholas Martin, played a tribute to Mario Lanza "who died at the very young age of 38". The tribute included 'Be My Love' which sounds absolutely fantastic when played on the Wurlitzer. I left this concert wanting to listen to Mario Lanza's version of this song. I bought this CD, which includes 'Be My Love'. It is a great song and the lyrics 'Be my love, For no one else can end this yearning . . . ' are heart-wrenching. I am now a Mario Lanza fan. This CD is an excellent compilation.
