Customer Reviews

Short, to the point, practical, well illustrated.4
This is agood introduction to goat keeping, although I felt I needed other books (Goat Husbandry by David Mackenzie and Jean Laing would be my top recommendation) to supplement my knowledge once I really got going with my "herd" - if you can call 4 goats a herd. Mowlem gives a whistle stop tour through goat breeds, housing, nutrition, breeding, dairy, fibre, meat, health and showing.

Every page has some useful table, diagram or photo. I found the photos of administering subcutaneous injections, overgrown and trimmed hooves and the diagram of a well designed goat shed especailly useful. The detailed descriptions of nutritional values of different foodstuffs was brilliant.

The book is written clearly and with a real love for the animals. I can recommend this to anyone contemplating keeping goats.

Practical Goat Keeping review4
I am planning to keep goats and wanted some practical advice on what to expect and how to prepare for their arrival. This book was very helpful and informative. It has given me a wide base of information to start from. Pictures of different breeds and a short description of them was good to help me with which breeds to choose. The section on housing was very helpful, lots of pictures that aided the written desctiptions. This gives a better idea of what to do if you can actually see it. Also good sections on nutrition, reproduction and raising the kids. Health and Disease section was usefull, again pictures which showed me symptoms and what to look for. Generally easy to read and understand and I enjoyed the book very much. It covered all the aspects I was wondering about. Recommended.
