Hoffnung meets Joyce Grenfell5
Anyone who hasn't heard Anna Russell should buy this CD immediately. It is worth it for her masterly summary of the Ring of the Nibelungs alone, which one can listen to again and again without growing tired of it. However, there is still more in store. "How to write your own Gilbert & Sullivan opera" is equally clever (and funny), and displays her very considerable musical knowledge, as do the smaller pieces, each of which is a work of genius.
A mistress of perfect timing, Anna Russell manages to milk her audience for all the laughter they can provide, and will do so too for all listeners to this CD. The only problem is that it is too short.....

Funny and musical5
The Gilbert & Sullivan and Wagner's Ring spoofs are brilliant, and my favourite of Anna Russell's performances. She's so musical at the same time as being hilarious. And what a voice.

Souvenir of an unforgettable encounter.5
I heard The Original at the Theater Club Caracas, Venezuela, in 1959 or 1960 - an impromptu informal performance at a Thursday Night Dinner Dance, where someone noticed SHE was there, with the friends she was visiting. We persuaded her onto the rostrum with the band, who sat back and let her let rip. Oh boy! Un - credible. The recording cannot hope to have the same sparkle, but it reminds me of a great evening, and of a totally delightful person, whom it was a privilege and pure pleasure to meet. H. G.
