Synopsis
Max Stevens (Steven Seagal) is the best kind of thief, a modern-day Robin Hood who steals from the rich and gives to those in need. His talents, however, are peerless, and he will do whatever it takes to get the job done, regardless of the ruthlessness involved. Convinced by his lover that it's time to go straight, Max agrees to one last heist, which, of course, does not go as planned. Set up and framed for a much bigger crime than the one he signed on for, Max finds himself in a high-security prison where he must prove his mettle among the inmates. He forms an unlikely friendship with Ice Cool (Anthony Treach Criss), and together they orchestrate a massive jailbreak, setting out to extract revenge from whoever set Max up. Much witty banter, explosions, and general mayhem follow, in an action film that delivers all the crucial elements.

Seagal's back better than ever
First of all please do not listen to the negative reviewers out there. If you are a fan of Seagal's movies then check this out!
I am 36 and remember all his previous films and this is one of his very best. So what if he has put a little weight on like a real person instead of captain six pack!( why are we so obsessed with looking "perfect " ?? Also I noticed no old footage what so-ever. Steven please give us more of the same great action movies like this it rocks. More of this please less of awful Broke*****it mountain rubbish !
Got to say, I thought It was good
This may not be the best of films, but compared to seagals previous few films its pretty good.
In Black Dawn Seagal blatantly got other people to do all his fights, even the simple stuff. In this film there are times when a stunt double is used such as the big fight at the beginning. But there are a few moments that remind you of how he used to be in his classics such as "Nico" and "Marked for Death". You cannot help but smile when he snaps that mans arm, or when the big muscly man tries to scare him in prison so seagal sorts him out. there are quite a few scenes where seagal shows he still is awesome at his martial arts.
I cant tell if its his own voice throughout the film but i think it is. The car chase scene through the city is surprisingly well filmed and exciting.
The main let down in this film is the psychic dreams that his wife has. There is no reason at all why these should be in this film as they bare no relevance to the story.
Overall, most people will see this film as rubbish, but for seagal fans like myself it shows the big man with the pony tail kicking arse like we havent seen for a while.
I LIKED IT
t's good to see Steven Seagal back in form after a few really terrible movies. Though this one is not on the level with "Under Siege," or my favorites, "Glimmer Man," "Exit Wounds," and "Fire Down Below," it is a vast improvement over "Submerged" and several other recent turkeys. I'm not sure how the title fits in except there is a lot of violent deaths as Harlan Banks (Seagal) gets even for a frame that lands him in prison where he teams with Ice Cool (Treach Criss)to find the loot Banks has hidden. A catchier title would have helped sell the movie, especially to non-Seagal fans. The acting is good by a well-chosen cast (naturally all of them are better actors than Seagal). Kevin Tighe is super as one of the heavies. Mari Morrow as Jada, Seagal's love interest, though a shade young for him, is a capable actress and should make a name for herself. Nick Mancuso is pleasantly evil who can smile and smile and be a villain. And Treach makes a good buddy for Seagal. It seems Seagal is going through an identity crisis in his personal life. Is he a Buddhist or a rapper, maybe a Buddhist rapper?
There is a resemblance between this film and an Anthony Mann film noir from 1947 "Desperate." The theme is very similar, particularly in the beginning. Maybe it is just a coincidence or maybe the writers were inspired by the original. Then again they may have watched "Desperate" on TV in the wee hours of morning and parts of it stuck in their heads.
Steven Seagal fans should like "Today You Die" as a return to form. Others, especially action fans, should enjoy it as well.
