Following the colossal battle against the Empire's warriors, Eragon and Saphira narrowly escaped with their lives. But more awaits the Rider and his dragon, as Eragon finds himself bound by promises he may not be able to keep, including his oath to cousin Roran to help rescue his beloved Katrina. When unrest claims the rebels and danger strikes, Eragon must make choices that take him across the Empire and beyond, choices that may lead to unimagined sacrifice. Conflict, action, adventure and one devastating death await readers as Eragon battles on behalf of the Varden while Galbatorix ruthlessly attempts to crush and twist him to his own purposes. Can he become a leader who can unite the rebel forces and defeat the King?

Customer Reviews
Crank up the action please
Very original series, good basic concept, well thought out and well written but in danger of becoming too long winded. The first book was long but a lot happened. As the series goes on less and less is action and more and more is conversation between incredibly verbose characters. The way it's heading by book 4 when the hero finally confronts the evil king he will talk so long that the latter will nod off, slip off his throne and break his neck as he hits the floor.
So then, great for people interested in an original and well detailed fantasy world but not for people who like their action closely spaced.
Its not that bad.
Ok, the other reviews do have some valid points and its not up to the standard of lord of the rings, despite being easier to read, but it does have some good points!! Eragon does seem to have several moral dilemas that aren't really dilemas and the Elves with all their wisdom do seem a bit childish at times but the basic story remains consistent, some parts are a little predictable but how many different directions can you go with a coming of age/adventure/save the world story? Eragon isn't arrogant compared to most teenage boys and he seems a bit overconcerned with what he will becomeif he enjoys war. Considering what his character goes through i think he developes quite well as a character. To me he is actually the best character apart from Nasuada, Nasuada seems quite focused as a character, however, despite also being a young character she doesn't really grow and is slightly two-dimensional but she's at least consistent. When taken in parts this book is easy to rip apart but as a story its quite an enjoyable read who's only major fault is the length. I think this book will be enjoyed differently by different people don't be put off by the reviews especially if you have read the first two books.
Where have the reviews gone?
Dreadful book. Cliched story, awful writing, horrible one-dimensional characters and embarassing 'moral' dilemmas.
Not worth spending any money on this; just imagine you are the main character from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or any fantasy story every written, multiply your skills and special-ness and the awe with which you are held by every other character by 10 for no reason whatsoever, then narrate your journey in the most incomprehensible way possible, and you have a fairly good idea of what it would be like to trawl through the hundreds of pages in 'Brisingr'. Except that's probably still not bad enough.
Ratings seem to be something of a conspiracy as I remember there being many, many more reviews for this book only a short while ago (lots of negative ones...) but they no longer exist. Don't be fooled by the ratings, it's a travesty of a novel, can't believe it was ever published!
- Things not properly mentioned in this short review: inexplicable universal admiration for terrible, arrogant, foolish, unlikeable self-insert Eragon, pointless plot branches and a ridiculous, inconsistent vocabulary (especially in speech). Please read something deserving of your time and money!
