Fluenz Italian 1+2 Learning Suite
I have been learning Italian for a while now via night school classes but this year the college combined 3 ability levels together! result being the second year/intermediate levels weren't really learning anything, so I decided to investigate alternative ways of continuing with my Italian. Before I purchased Fluenz I was concerned it would be too basic and wouldn't `stretch me' enough, so I contacted Fluenz, who were very helpful in outlining content etc.
This is a very good software language programme and I am happy with my purchase, I like the interactive workouts, and the voice recording sessions are great - being able to practice speaking and compare my own accent to that of a native speaker. It also seems to be helping me more than night school did with my word and sentence order, and some of the grammar rules!
The language tutor at the start and end of each exercise is very encouraging - which is what you need when trying to learn a language.
The only real criticism I have is that you can't download the program to the hard drive (I understand all the issues about copyright infringement etc.,) but as someone who has purchased the genuine program I find it irritating that there is a constant `whirring' noise from the CD drive when using the program - this is particularly off putting when in the voice recording sections of the exercises.

Great device for learning those phrases you really need to know quickly
I read about this learning system on Amazon.com (with its reviews) so I thought I would give it a try in order to brush up on some Italian!

Right from the get go I was impressed - the snazzy red box was imploring me to get going! As I already have learnt some Italian grammar I got through it quickly. I was pleasantly surprised that the people who have put this together have realised that learning a language shouldn't be a chore nor do you want to be talked down to like a child. The vocabulary and conversations are those you will encounter straight away and thereby this system gives you the confidence of being able to hit the ground running and encourages you to keep at it! The intelligent way of reusing the vocabulary and writing/translating phrases is very useful and for the older student a subtle way of getting the vocab to stick in there!

I have enjoyed using this course (and as yet have to finish it) but would recommend it to anyone who is looking to learn a new language or to brush up on a long forgotten school lesson. It's not too time consuming with bite sized chapters and positive reinforcement of everyday vocabulary. All I need now is to head to Italy and amaze the locals (and my family)!
