A little-known gem about a lot more than just motorbikes5
Jack Gray's deeply personal memoir is a charming testament to a vanished world. His '30s motorcycling' includes some epic rides that most modern riders would think more than twice about (including two round-trips of 750 miles to give his girlfriend a lift to Scotland and back in winter - and it snowed!) but he pulls down his flat cap, turns up his collar and describes his derring-do as if it is simply the perfect solution to having a trip to do and little money on which to do it. The bikes are central to the story of a man who would later become a major motorcycle dealer, but at its heart, this is also the story of a country boy whose life seems to race through half the Industrial Revolution in the space of his late adolescence.
