Editorial Reviews

Review
'Playing and Learning Outdoors offers early years practitioners realistic advice and guidance on developing effective practice when working with young children outdoors ... [It] is well structured, easily read and very fairly priced. The book deserves its place in Nursery World's series of essential guides for early years practitioners.' - Early Years Update

From the Back Cover

There is now a growing appreciation of the importance and value of learning through play outdoors.

In a world where it is perceived that children can no longer ‘play out’ freely and safely, Playing and Learning Outdoors shows early years practitioners how to pay more attention to making good use of the outdoors for the enjoyment, health and education of children from 3 to 5 years.

This book will allow practitioners to develop rich and stimulating outdoor play provision in Early Years settings and enable them to feel confident to offer wonderful play experiences outdoors.

Playing and Learning Outdoors offers practitioners achievable advice and support, based on approaches which are appropriate and effective for young children’s all-round well-being and development. The book includes practical advice on:

  • movement and physical play
  • playing with sand, natural materials and water
  • plants, living things and growing
  • construction, creative and imaginative play

Filled with advice and support, this lively, inspiring and accessible book will help practitioners to develop a truly practical and enjoyable approach to learning through play outdoors.

Customer Reviews

A useful all-in-one early years outdoor book5
I have to admit I was delighted when I read this book to discover that it was not covering old ground with regard to outdoor play and learning. Jan White is a "pracademic" who combines practical experience within an academic job. This book covers the practical elements of an outdoor area, for example, the maintenance aspects of having an outdoor sandpit. This is frequently overlooked by many outdoor play books. It is also a much quicker read than I expected it to be. The black and white photos do not make the book as attractive as some but in this case the quality of the advice and commentary makes this a very good buy. If you are on a tight budget this book is good value for money.
