An essential for the travelling computer user.5
When i decided to buy a laptop i sacrified space for specs, and whilst this was cheaper to begin with i soon found that my 40GB of space would not suffice.

I bought a Western Digital 80GB HD not long after and this served me well for a year or so, until i had filled it up with files.

Looking to expand my memory capacity by a substantial amount i stumbled upon this HD, made by the same company that provided me with such an excellent little portable drive beforehand.

For your money you get a nice little drive. It's not as big as it seems to be in photographs, in fact it's smaller when stood upright than my 80GB HD. The drive is designed to look like a book which is cute, and it has a nifty ring that surrounds the power button on the front that tells you when it's in use.

The drive can be used upright or on it's side and includes adhesive feet which can be added if you favour the second choice. The drive comes with a British and American AC adapter, and can be switched between the two with little hassle.

In addition to this i find that some of the reviews on this site are unfair on it's apparent noise issues. Mine runs very quietly and only makes a small amount of noise when i am transferring alot of files either from it or onto it.

Overall i would recommend this for anyone who wants an affordable solution to a small hard drive.

Stylish Drive for your Digital Media5
My review refers tothe 400GB version of the WD My Book.

I needed a new external hard disk to backup all my DVDs to so I could have digital versions to play through my Media Centre PC in the living room. As such I needed something that was both stylish in design and quiet when running. The WD My Book is both.

Setup is a snap with nothing to install. Although the drive does come with Google Desktop/Toolbar and some Windows Backup software I chose not to install these. Once plugged in the drive appeared under My Computer and just worked.

It is an incredibly quiet drive but beyond this something you would quite happily display on a shelf in your living room. The matt black finish with the slightly rounded corners along with the simple circle of light on the front are obviously the result of some determined design thought from WD.

I will certainly be buying at least one more of these and would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone else.

Great value, easy to use product5
I'm a Mac user, which means I'm rather wary of buying non-Apple products that may only work properly with PCs. I've had this a month now and it worked straight out of the box. It's relatively quiet, responsive, and once I erased it and reformatted it to Mac OS X (journaled), it was super-quick when doing backups with Carbon Copy Cloner. Best of all it's super-cheap! I'll be hanging onto my receipt in case it's too good to last of course, but so far I'm delighted with this product.
