Offering a real improvement on its predecessor and successfully introducing one of the world of comics’ most popular characters in the process, Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer easily warrants some attention on DVD to go with its impressive box office take.

Picking up where the surprisingly tepid original left off, Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer finds the Marvel Comics Universe’s first family dealing with the celebrity that their powers have brought them, to the point where even a simple wedding can’t take place without interruption.

The film then takes a little while to re-establish its characters and re-introduce some of the issues that underpin them. But it’s not too long before the Silver Surfer arrives, and things really get into gear. For make no mistake: it’s the Surfer who ignites the film and provides some of the very best moments of Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer. Backed up by some superb special effects work, he’s a far more interesting draw that the returning Julian McMahon as Dr Doom.

While there are, inevitably, various problems that each of the characters in Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer must face, the film never opts to go knee-deep into them. Instead, it chooses a light, breezy tone, that’s suited well to family viewing yet not without some genuine blockbuster moments.

It’s no classic, but Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer is most certainly fun. And it’s equally certain that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of this quintet of heroes... --Jon Foster

Synopsis
The sequel to the 2005 blockbuster FANTASTIC FOUR, RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER finds the Marvel superhero quartet of Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd), Sue Storm (Jessica Alba), Johnny Storm (Chris Evans), and Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis) facing an extraterrestrial threat in the form of the title character (played by Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne), an enigmatic being whose presence on Earth could signal the planet's end. Amidst the ensuing action, Reed and Sue attempt to tie the knot, and an old foe (Dr. Doom, portrayed by Julian McMahon) waits in the wings, allowing for plenty of levity and drama.
This FANTASTIC FOUR outing, once again directed by Tim Story, gets much of its verve from the Silver Surfer himself. Played by Jones, an actor best known for his dual roles in PAN'S LABYRINTH, the Surfer is more than just CGI sheen, with subtle movements that seem truly alien and a voice of supreme gravitas, courtesy of Fishburne. Reed and Sue deal with wedding woes, while the fiery Johnny (aka The Human Torch) and a rock-solid Ben (The Thing) provide an extra dose of humour in a power-switching plot, making the film much lighter than other Marvel offerings.

A Little More Fantastic
After three previous attempts, Dr. Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) and Sue Storm (Jessica Alba) are finally getting married. Reed promises that nothing will get in the way this time.

But that's before the weird anomalies start happening. A bay in Japan freezes over. It starts snowing in Egypt. And Los Angeles loses power.

This latest crisis just confirms Sue's fears that the two superheroes will never be able to raise kids and live a normal life. She and Reed begin to think about leaving the Fantastic Four, which doesn't sit well with the other members, Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis) and Johnny Storm (Chris Evans).

Meanwhile, the threat just keeps growing. This creature is creating giant holes in the ground. And he has awakened Dr. Von Doom (Julian McMahon). Can the Fantastic Four work together to save the day?

When you go to see a super hero film, you expect action and special effects. This movie has both in spades. It's like everything in the first movie was just a set up to get to a real story. Which is a good thing since I felt the first film was rather weak. And while there is only one real standout action sequence, there are plenty of smaller sequences that were lots of fun. As you'd expect, the special effects are believable. And there are lots of funny bits as well, especially when Johnny is around. And Stan Lee's standard cameo? Absolutely hilarious.

So, what didn't I enjoy? The story was rather predictable, and, despite character driven sub-plots, the characters are rather flat. The actors do what they can, but they don't have much to work with.

Finally, the editing seemed choppy, mainly at the scene breaks. It was like bits and pieces were cut out. It was minor, but it did throw me out of the film a couple times.

This isn't great cinema, but it is an enjoyable way to pass a couple hours. If you love these characters, you should be happy. And if you thought the first one was weak, give this one a chance. I'm certainly glad I did.

A maturer four, with a very cool Silver Surfer
There were some that found the original movie of this franchise a little silly. Personally, despite being obviously aimed at a teen audience I really quite enjoyed it.

This time we have a slightly darker filmatic and maturer storyline but stay very much within the refreshingly playful characterisations. Here the planned wedding of Sue Storm and Reed Richards runs parallel to the arrival of the Silver Surfer who's job it is to prepare the way for a nasty looking cloud of planet killing molten stuff.

We are then propelled on an entertaining, globe trotting sequence of attempts to part the surfer from his silver board and hopefully throw nasty cloud off track. All the while Victor von Doom keeps pace, waiting on the first opportunity for world domination.

Good fun, well made and not too taxing. This entertains although the story as a whole did not seem as cohesive as the original. I think in trying to tie together too many plot lines.

PROS: The silver surfer was cool.

CONS: Once more an invisible Jessica Alba loses her invisible powers while running around naked, but of course just as we inhale, choking in expectation on our popcorn, a convenient item of scenery saves her modesty. Very upsetting.

Fantastic!
I saw this film today and it was fantastic. If you liked the first one you'll love this one. In case anyone noticed the first film contained a lot of talking but this one was just action and of coarse some talking! The action scenes are great. They don't last too long but they were fun to watch. There were quite a few battles in this film and the last one was probably the longest. The final battle was incredible. Brilliant special effects and CGI. The story - Reed and Sue are due to get married but during their wedding the mysterious Silver Surfer turns up (at just the wrong moment) and wrecks their wedding and the Fantastic 4 have yet another villain to beat.

This film may be a bit more violent and they swear a bit more so I don't recommend it for young children. It has been rated PG for a reason. The Silver Surfer was totally awesome and he wasn't all CGI so that was pretty cool. In most superhero films you just want the bad guy to lose but in this case Silver Sufer may actually become the good guy and you end up liking him! He had an awesome voice too. A character from the first film also returns and has gone mad with power! Nope. This is one superhero film you don't want to miss. There wasn't many cheesy lines and the acting once again was very good. Some scenes just take your breath away. I definitely recommend this film. 10/10.
