Contemporary looks, bright display, nice software
I've had my Acer 5710 for a few days now. I'm used to using compaq and HP business laptops, so bear that in mind as you read my comments.
First off, this doesn't look like a drab old business laptop. It has a contemporary design, half matt grey (keyboard half) and half shiney black. The build quality is pretty good, better than I expected (I'm pretty demanding!)
The screen is STUNNING its the shiney type that seems very bright and colourful compared to my HP NC6400 laptop that cost nearly twice as much.
The machine uses integrated graphics that steals some memory from the OS but it runs Aero and Glass perfectly. The 1024Mb looks a bit thin, I will probably swap the 2X512 DDR2 PC5300 sodimms for a pair of 1024Mb sometime.
The built in (intel) network card works very well, better range than my old atheros based card in the old laptop. I presume this is due to the aerial technology built into the top of the screen. You can turn the wifi off when not in use to save battery.
Talking of the battery, I haven't run on it much yet, but it seems to last well and charge quickly.
The laptop doesn't get anywhere near as warm as my HP. Also it's pretty quiet, except of course when using the cdrom drive.
The included software is reasonable at the price point. I'm not a fan of the crap manufacturers often bundle with their machines. I deleted the game demos but everyhting else has remained so far. The backup tools are nice. I also like that pressing the green-e button gives you a status screen overlay with info from the acer network/screen/security etc drivers. A nice touch.
The disk comes in 3 chunks. 10gb EISA partition with the installation/boot info. Part 2 about 35Gb is the C drive and part 3 is 35Gb D: drive. Note if you intend to delete the D drive and expand the c drive to all the space you wont be able to use the included backup tool to backup to disk as it seems to be hard wired to the D drive (to a folder called erdata)
So far I only have 2 things I don't like:
1. You can't fold the screen right back to 180 degrees in line with the keyboard. Guess most people wont want to do this anyway.
2. The touchpad is a litte unresponsive at times. However I have yet to check for latest drivers for this (it seems to be the same part as inluded in some sony and HP laptops) and I haven't played with the settings much.
Overall at £400 I think its VERY good. I looked at some sub £400 machines before buying but they always seemed to come with just Vista Home Basic.
Oh the laptop also comes with MS works and a trial for Office (60 days). I didnt try these as I have a full office license. Not sure it mentions Works on the Amazon specs, but its there.
There is also several bundled extra home entertainment cd/dvd/video/camera programs too.
There was a windows Vista DVD in the box, but no acer recover disc. You can burn this yourself using the recovery disk option in Erecovery program. this requires two blank DVD-R.
Hope this helps someone. I'd definitely buy again.
Excellent value laptop but with a few quirks.
I received my 5710 from another website because at the time i couldn't find this particular item on Amazon, however upon receiving the item i was very impressed. For a sub £400 range laptop it certainly doesn't skip in quality aspects, for one thing the quality of the screen is excellent, the pictures look sharp and it brings out the Aero effect brilliantly. I presume the Crystal Brite technology allows for a perhaps CRT quality image since i suspect it is glass fronted to bring out the clarity.
In terms of the keyboard and trackpad, if you've never used a laptop keyboard before then you'll find it difficult at first because many desktop users tend to angle their keyboards either towards or away from them, therefore using a laptop it is not possible to do that. I would urge any new user to spend time learning to use the keyboard again. The track pad is good but like the other reviewer mentioned it has a tendency to stick and become unusable from time to time, i presume this is a mechanical problem or simply driver related so i will contact Acer about it at a later date if it becomes a frequent problem.
The bundled software includes a 60day trial of Office, which is most generous since i was interested in upgrading to the latest version anyway the new version is very good but takes a while to get used to simply because it is not drop down menu driven anymore and is now available in terms of tabs which sits on a ribbon. If you're unsure what i mean then search 'office 2007 ribbon' into Google Images. The other software includes some of the Acers own version's of the Windows built in services such as Wireless Networking Management and other features such as power settings, perhaps useful to some but i prefer Windows own services.
Vista Home Premium is a nice inclusion because it moves beyond Home Basic and therefore includes more features such as Media Centre, which is useful for people with alot of media on their systems and who wish to perhaps manage it via a large screen.
The wireless reception is not quite as good as other Acer laptops but i think it depends on where the antennas are placed for example in some laptops it is placed near the motherboard, where as in this system it is situated at the top of the screen, therefore depending on the location of your wireless networking device it can reduce signal by a small amount.
The core 2 duo T5500 aids in terms of performance, for example i can multi-task quite easily due to the fact that the processor is dual-cored therefore tasks are prioritized depending on the the amount of use the processors are under, so for example if Core 1 is being utilised by 1% then most tasks will take place on that core depending on how much strain core 2 is under.
1GB of RAM is generous but the built in graphics use around 255MB of this therefore you are left with less than 1GB so in my opinion i would upgrade to 2GB later on to further aid performance. At the moment there is 2 x 512MB PC5300 SODIMM RAM installed but for better performance i would change them for 2 x 1GB PC5300 SODIMM.
Overall this laptop is excellent and extremely good value for money. If you're in the market for a new laptop but can't afford more than £400 then this laptop is your first option :)
Acer 5710 Notebook - yes it's a good one.
I ordered this from Amazon Reseller for family. Excellent service, PC was as described. I use PC's all day and was pleasantly surprised by Vista Premium. The PC boots up quickly and seems responsive. Screen is excellent. Keyboard area is quite spacious and keys feel good. Casing is not super sturdy so will not stand too much presure in a squashed bag so protect it adequately but on the hwole good build and lots of ports. Processor is fast and memory upgrade seems readily available should i find the intergrated graphics is hogging too much memory. Not a full on gamers spec but excellent quality/price for most home users I would say. The 80GB drive might be average for folk who store everything and delete little but I will make DVD Rescue disks and remove the 10GB recovery partition so that will be a useful slice of storage to get back. I am pleased and think Acer has done a good job with this price/spec. Lookslike this model is being replaced but I think the 'gemstone' design of Acer's Aspire range is good, so definitely consider a gemstone version. I will probably tidy up/remove some of the included apps as they take space (e.g. Norton IS) but some users may find them useful if they do not already have similar. Good job Acer and Amazon.
