Synopsis
Linda La Plante's gritty crime drama TRIAL AND RETRIBUTION follows Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Walker (David Hayman) and DCI Roison Connor (Victoria Smurfit) in their continuing fight for justice. Each episode starts out with a crime being committed, its discovery, the ensuing investigation and arrests, and culminates in a final dramatic courtroom showdown. The feature-length episodes are 'Rules Of The Game', 'Kill The King', 'Conviction', and 'The Box'.

Third DVD the only really good one.3
All stories save the last one, The box, contain a great deal of overacting and scripts written by writers other than LaPlante, suffer by comparison with her excellent writing. Smurfit doesn't seem to be able to get a handle on her character, who vascillates between smarmy pseudo-sexiness, and angry overreactions. David Hayman does not play against her well at all. They are both abrasive and that makes for unpleasant viewing.

However, in the last episode, "The Box," finally LaPlante writes again, and she's so very good at it. Hayman is at his best, too, without the preening, strutting, bouncing Smurfit.

In The Box episode, the female lead is played by Kerry Fox, who is terrific. I don't understand why her name isn't on the DVD box or disc. It was good to see gravelly voiced David O'Hara again.

Comparing Smurfit with Fox is like comparing glitz with substance. Hayman's performance in The Box is much better than any other he gives in this series.

The whole series has been fantastic, I cannot wait for the latest dvd to be realeased I have it on pre order!
Definitely the best ever Crime series

A very good series for those who like crime dramas5
I purchased this item to continue viewing the series of programmes. It is a very good well written crime series that is very entertaining and quite often close to reality (I'm an ex-copper).
Anyone who likes crime 'stuff' should give it a go.
