A secluded mansion in Racoon City has been the centre of top secret biotech experiments funded by a mysterious corporation known only as Umbrella. When contact with the scientists at the mansion is broken and reports of gory attacks come in from nearby areas two Special Tactics and Rescue Squads (S.T.A.R.S.), comprising of Bravo and Alpha teams are sent to investigate. Bravo team vanishes almost immediately with Alpha team being chased into the foreboding mansion by a pack of monstrous creatures.

Taking control of sharp shooting Alpha team member Chris Redfield or demolitions expert Jill Valentine, players of Resident Evil embark on a horrific quest through the dark and mysterious mansion filled with acid spitting zombies, giant spiders, mutant dogs and other equally deformed creatures. Thankfully a number of items can be claimed throughout the adventure from weapons such as shotguns, pistols, knives and bazookas to defeat the grizzly hordes along with medicine to heal any wounds and maps to provide a guide through the myriad of corridors.

A CLASSIC, The best of the lot

This game was one of the first I bought when I got my Playstation about 10 years ago. It was SO scary for me, and unworldly 13 year-old, and my poor little 8 year-old sister (who was eventually so scared of it she wouldn't even watch me play it!) The gameplay was completely absorbing, and there are parts that genuinely make you jump. Even now, when I root out the old PS it is still a challenging game.

The graphics aren't exactly PS3 standard- but hey, considering this game came out a decade ago the graphics are pretty darn good. The puzzles are entertaining- which shows that this isn't just a mindless shoot-em-up. (they ARE fun, but can get tiresome after a while.... this keeps you going because amongst the quite tricky bits of zombie bashing you come across different scenarios & tricks all the time!)

The zombies in this game are really eerie... they seem to just wander around, but once they know you're there they become blood-sucking lechs! they are hard to kill, particularly if you're out of ammo & only have a knife to do the job!

a couple of the sequels haven't lived up to the RE name- but in march 09 there's a new one- RE5... which goes back to the original character of Chris Redfield... so i'll look forward to that one, as it's coming out on XB360 too.... I'm EXCITED !!!!!!

Another part of the "90's" in me
I've got the game, and its unlikely I'll ever sell it. Its just another part of me which shows what the 90's was all about with the Playstation - gameplay. I don't care much for the fancy graphics of new next gen consoles, I still play this game and many more on my PS2 (well, you just have to have PES!)
The game itself was one of the best of the series, though not as good as the brillantly atmospheric 2. The lines and dialogue are incredible cheesey, and the opening "cast" sequence, that replicates a Hollywood style opening with a group of actors immatating the characters, is cheesey enough to bring the mice back out!
Though I'm not bothered about this. The music is eerie, the the graphics are real enough, and it really is survival horror!

the original survival horror
This is the original, this is where it all started with the `survival horror' games - and what a fuss it caused. On release, I remember everyone campaigning to ban it and didn't that make you want to play it even more?

I'll admit straight away that I played this AFTER RE2 so it was never going to be the be all and end all to me. Saying that, I still found it a solid and fun game. The only let down was that the graphics weren't that good and the controls felt a little stiff, but then again, it was an early PS1 game.

The game is set in a mansion where the surviving members of an elite police force unit - STARS are trapped after investigating reports of strange disturbances in the woods. What they find is a mansion full of zombies and other such creatures - very cool.

The acting, however, is absolutely appalling, who get the people in to do the voices? They're awful, but that is part of the charm. I enjoyed this game when I played it, but I feel it would be dated that on anything but the Game Cube version. Only for hardcore fans of the series.
