An unapreciated masterpeice
It is beyond me how this game doesnt sit in the hall of fame.

Please buy and experience this for yourself (warning this game game is freakishley dark, none of that true crime; streets of LA good or evil rubbish, includes drug,sex etc refrences) - luckily amazon doesnt recognuise pegi age ratings so available to all ages ( Although its darker corners are to much for anyome under 14 ) Happy Gaming!

OK but no GTA
In True Crime you play the role of NYPD Beat Cop Marcus Reed, who at the time you take control is just a couple of tutorials away from making detective. Marcus has come this far under the wing of Detective Terrence "Terry" Higgins who is soon killed in mysterious circumstances on a call out and thus begins the storyline which sees Marcus attempting to investigate and ultimately avenge the killing of his mentor.

Though he is now a cop Marcus has never shaken his shadowy past as a former gangster, his dad is also a Mr Big residing in a very cosy jail cell. Due to his past Marcus encapsulates both good cop and bad cop. Whilst Good-Cop Marcus puts his life on the line by taking crucial extra seconds to line up a non-lethal leg or arm shot, ensuring an uzi-weilding hostage taker or crazed firestarter have their day in court Bad-Cop Marcus thinks nothing of dishing out his own instant justice, taking down an unarmed vagrant brawling in the street with a head shot. Marcus's bad-cop antics also extend to extorting the owners of small businesses and mowing down pedestrians on his way to answer an emergency call, during a street race or just for fun.

The action takes place in Manhattan, New York. Marcus's preferred transport is by car however, there is also a convenient subway system which can help ease the pain of long repetitive Journeys. The free roaming nature of the game may at this point invite some comparisons with GTA, leave these behind now! If a comparison must be made the New York on offer here has more in common with the London of The Getaway than Liberty City.

The physics of the cars is also more reminiscent of the slightly awkward handling of The Getaway than the increasingly fluid GTA cars which makes for driving becoming an increasingly frustrating experience. There are a few signature police driving moves like a swift 180 degree turn which can be accessed by purchasing the skill with your in game $$$ however, these cannot break free of the constraints offered by the poor physics which will result in you writing off enough cars to bankrupt a major insurance company.

Marcus has access to an impressive array of both police and illicit weaponry , though this is let down somewhat by an awkward manual targeting system which means that however impressive his arsenal most encounters with the bad guys will result in a more than a few bruises.

The city itself seems as good a reproduction of Manhattan as you can tell without being there and the NY themed soundtrack adds to the ambience. The interiors also add a huge amount of depth to the city and are a welcome innovation which will surely become de riguer for the genre on the next gen platforms.

The storyline itself is weak and characters forgettable. Lacking the dark humour which abounds in GTA True Crime begins to play like a forgettable action movie. It's pretentions at John Woo style action with the slow-mo dive and fire move sadly crash lands more often than impresses.

Wow...whats wrong with you?
What is wrong with everyone? Its a great game! I admit there are a few glitches here and there...but who cares? I think it's really good and you can get demoted and you end up in your blue-police uniform! COOL

The ONLY bad thing I found was the story. Its too short. What they did to make up for it is add illegal racing, fighting and 'informants'. Where you do work for someone in exchange for information on the gang you are trying to put away.

I'd give it a 5 star overall but the story is way too short....

My favorite bit though is buying new clothes and hairstyles!!!
